Real Madrid have confirmed former Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate as their third signing of the summer, having already announced deals for Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva.

Konate, who was an unused substitute as France beat Senegal 3-1 in their opening match at the World Cup on Monday, left Liverpool as a free agent at the end of 2025-26.

He joined the Reds from RB Leipzig in 2021 and helped them win the Premier League title under Arne Slot in 2024-25, as well as two EFL Cups and one FA Cup under Jurgen Klopp.

Konate also partnered Virgil van Dijk in the heart of Liverpool’s defence for the 2022 Champions League final, which they lost 1-0 to Madrid.

The 27-year-old had been touted as a potential target for Los Blancos for several months, and he will now link up with his former Liverpool team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Konate will officially join Madrid at the end of this month, having signed a four-year contract with the Spanish giants.

Madrid have already confirmed the arrivals of Cucurella, a €60m (£51.8m) acquisition from Chelsea, and Konate’s fellow free agent Silva, as they gear up for their second stint under Jose Mourinho.

Konate made 183 appearances for Liverpool, which is the most by any French-born player in the club’s history.

Of those games, 154 came alongside Van Dijk, with the duo forming a formidable partnership at the back.
