Jurgen Klopp explained RB Leipzig did not believe Ole Werner was the right head coach to lead them in the future.
Leipzig announced their decision to part ways with Werner on Wednesday, with the 38-year-old lasting only one season in the role.
Werner led Leipzig to a third-place finish in the Bundesliga, albeit 24 points behind champions Bayern Munich, while they were also knocked out in the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal by Vincent Kompany’s side.
During his time at Leipzig, Werner won 23 of his 38 games at the helm (D5 L10), seeing his team score 77 goals and concede 53 across those matches.
Klopp, the head of global soccer at Red Bull, explained the club’s decision to sack Werner after just one season in charge.
“We are acting in an advisory capacity as the Global Team,” Klopp said. “But we were involved in the decision-making process and analysed the season.
“Ole [Werner] did a fantastic job. We qualified for the Champions League.
“But we also have to look forward at the same time. And when we thought about what that might look like, they decided on a change.”
Ole Werner is no longer head coach of RB Leipzig. Assistant coaches Tom Cichon and Patrick Kohlmann have also been relieved of their duties. Marcel Schäfer, managing director for sport, informed the coaching team of the decision on Wednesday.

Martin Demichelis has been named as one of the favourites to succeed Werner at Leipzig.
Demichelis is currently contracted with Mallorca, who were relegated from LaLiga on goal difference, though he did win LaLiga Manager of the Month in April.
The former Bayern Munich player had a successful spell with River Plate between 2022 and 2024, with whom he won three trophies.
When asked about the Demichelis rumours, Klopp responded: “I’m not involved in speculation now. Everything that can be said will come from Leipzig.”
