The San Jose Sharks welcome the Edmonton Oilers into SAP Center.
Macklin Celebrini is back in the line-up after missing two games.
Celebrini scored, but the Sharks lost 3-1.
Not a fan of this repetitive use of the dramatic Shark Head coming down to Hans Zimmer’s “Do You Think I’m Saxon?” Call me an old fuddy-duddy, but it should be a special occasion thing, opening night and playoffs.
Laila Edwards!
Surprise appearance to drop the puck before the game. Huge crowd pop!

1 in: Calm backhand under pressure by Dickinson to Celebrini for exit. That was poised.
Mukhamadullin gets a warm response, just shown on the scoreboard

5 in: Patience by Stenberg walking down slot, impressive.
7 in: Smith sound defensive position for interception in slot, then gorgeous stretch to Marchment. Good showcase there of his skills.
9 left: Good close and takeaway on Joseph in corner by Misa. That’s a sign of improvement.
Ekholm goal: San Jose Sharks had good start to game, but third line couldn’t get it out, and Ekholm just wired it high. Good Frederic screen, Askarov barely moved.
6 left: Good defensive shift by Cagnoni, a couple takeaways. Later in shift though, think Smith forced a pass into the OZ slot, turnover, that I didn’t love.
5 left: Misa head of steam with puck is going to be a scary sight at SAP Center for years to come. He is fast.
4 left: Dickinson steps up on Formenton receiving exit pass, great steal. Whiffs on the slapper, but Misa follows up off the crossbar. Dickinson showing the flashes last couple of games, love to see it.
2 left: Dickinson has it, time and space, just has to make the bounce stretch pass, past one forechecker, to the waiting Shark. Doesn’t, icing. Just a little touch, a little more finesse, and we’ll really have something. He really rifles the puck, good and bad.
I actually liked this period for the San Jose Sharks, even though they’re down. Engaged and physical, unlike other recent first periods sans Celebrini.
Perfect corner dump-in by Stenberg for Sherwood, Sherwood, I think, should’ve just fired that at the net. Diagonal dump-in, bounced in corner right to Sherwood. Great touch by the rook.
1 in: Marchment in the slot off Celebrini set-up. Mack looks fine.
Toffoli separates Dickinson from the puck beautifully on forecheck. That was outstanding.
3 in: Nice little backhand bump under duress by Dickinson to Trouba. His puck-moving has been impressive today.
5 in: Sherwood just got a good piece of McDavid in corner, much to delight of Shark Tank.
This might be the most poised game with the puck that I’ve seen from Dickinson.
6 in: Marchment eats up Shea on the forecheck. I’m watching Shea a little tonight, I know there was reasonable support to sign him over Trouba. Still surprised Pens did little to re-sign him, wonder if they knew something that just didn’t make him seem like a long-term guy to them. His age and (relative value) contract seemed perfect for them.
7 in: Ostapchuk does nice job to escape Frederic forecheck to get it out. Chernyshov with a nice saucer to Goodrow for entry, then he picks maybe Frederic so Cagnoni can get off a point shot. Good shift for him.
8 in: Good patience and vision by Sherwood to slow it down, hit trailer Kesselring, who fires it high and wide. Like the attack though, ends with Nurse point shot.
Dickinson down low, had Smith open in front, but rifles it. That was some touch away from a goal. Regardless, love Sam’s improvement today. It’s steps, not an overnight thing.
9 in: Cagnoni at point, sheds Hallander beautifully.
10 in: Stenberg interception and shot, Warsofsky wants him to shoot more.
#SJSharks are down, but I have to think Warsofsky has been pleased with the team’s performance so far.
Playing poised hockey, have outshot Oilers 6-0 through 12 minutes of 2nd period

8 left: Marchment eats up Mukhamaduliln on forecheck. Sharks need more Grade-A chances, but otherwise, like how they’re playing, poised and fast.
5 left: Trouba, who replaced Mukhamadullin on #SJSharks blueline, just bulldozed him.
4 left: Outstanding shift by fourth line, playing fast, love Chernyshov taking it to the net.
1 left: Celebrini post, great shift to end period. Sharks should be tied or up. Just keep it up, that’s what good and mature teams do.
Sherwood penalty: Love Sherwood, but that’s a bad penalty. You can switch him and Chernyshov rest of game after this. I’d never scratch Kiefer, his energy is infectious and more importantly consistent, but that is wrong time and more so wrong power play. Maybe his argument is Draisaitl went down easy.
2 in: Huge Askarov save on Bouchard. Sharks PK doing good job of packing up middle, keeping it to outside. McDavid tried a couple passes into slot, no go. Big kill, good job.
Podkolzin goal: But hard to keep a superstar down, great McDavid pass, Podkolzin drills the one-timer past Askarov. Timing of it, would love the clutch save, but that was a prime chance and he got all of it. If the question is who got momentum from the Oilers power play, the Sharks with the big kill or the Oilers who finally got to feel some offense, just eight shots after two periods, feels like it was Oil.
Formenton goal: That hurts. So much to dislike on that goal. Between Celebrini and Marchment, someone has to hang back while the other chases the puck high. Celebrini was quicker to puck, so Marchment should’ve been backing up. Then Trouba, I’m not sure if he reads that he’s going to get help on Formenton, maybe aggressive playing the pass, and he’s smoked. When Trouba looks bad, he looks bad.
8 left: Chernyshov gets up to top line instead, well deserved. But Celebrini gets called for tripping right after.
Celebrini goal: Celebrini just wanted that puck more than Formenton. Then Misa great poise, finds Celebrini coming back, and Mack just wires it.
7 left: Dickinson kills Howard defensively in corner. Love.
3 left: What a sequence, I think McDavid hits two ENG posts, and maybe Bouchard has an empty net bid from high slot that’s blocked.
