BURLINGTON – Davon Barr’s knee brace is a reminder of the past.

However, the quickness, smooth cuts and hard-hitting defense are what the senior brings to the present. It all also points to a bright future.

Barr rushed for a pair of touchdowns and led a stellar defensive effort that led the Glassboro High School football team to a dominating 33-0 win over Burlington Township on Saturday afternoon.

“I feel great,” said Barr, who suffered a torn ACL in the state Group 1 championship last December on the turf at Rutgers University. “Just been working hard to get better.”

With speed similar to what he possesses on the football field, Barr made a quick return from his knee injury, lining up on defense for Glassboro’s first game in August against Immaculata less than nine months after sustaining the injury.

“He’s a different type of guy,” Glassboro head coach Timmy Breaker said. “He got back for that first game and he’s actually better than he was last year and he continues to get better every week. It’s crazy, but that’s just the type of kid he is.

“Davon Barr is a vocal leader, he’s an I’ll-show-you-how-to-do-it leader and he plays with a motor. Not many kids can play with that high-tier motor all game like Davon does.”

After rushing for over 1,300 yards in his first three years with the Bulldogs, Barr’s work in backfield on Saturday was his first of the season. He carried four times for 13 yards with two runs finishing in the end zone.

Barr’s best work came on defense where the 6-foot-1, 195-pound linebacker had four tackles on Burlington Township’s first five plays from scrimmage.

Burlington Township’s offense was hindered without the services of quarterback Bryce Carter and running back Aiden Binns because of injuries, and Glassboro took full advantage.

The Bulldogs held Burlington Township to minus-10 yards on 25 plays and created four takeaways, including a pick-6 by Xavier Sabb.

Glassboro’s shutout was its second in the last three weeks. Last season, the Bulldogs’ defense notched eight shutouts, one shy of the South Jersey record set by the 1917 Millville squad.

“We’ve been preaching fast and physical around here since we were all 5 or 6 years old,” Barr said. “Last year’s defense was something very special, but that’s in the past. We’re just trying to be the best defense we can be and try to get better each week.”

Barr has committed to Sacred Heart University, but Breaker said he wouldn’t be surprised if more schools call as this season plays out.

After winning consecutive state Group 1 titles, Glassboro has been moved up to Group 2 by the NJSIAA this season. The Bulldogs also experienced a jump up to the larger-school Diamond Division of the West Jersey Football League.

It’s been a win-win situation for the Bulldogs according to Breaker.

“It’s fun for the kids,” the head coach said. “We’ve been waiting on it for probably 20 years around here. These kids want to be challenged and they’re taking it very seriously.”

Barr added, “We’ve been waiting for an opportunity like this for four years and we’re happy we’re getting a chance to play these bigger schools.”

Without two of its top playmakers, Burlington Township wanted to keep things simple on offense.

“It was like we went back to the 1950 playbook,” head coach Stephen Everette said. “We went North Carolina four corners, I was slowing this thing all the way down.”

Everette was pleased with this team’s physicality in the game, something that was missing in last week’s 49-0 loss to St. Augustine.

“I was glad we were more physical this week,”  he said.

Everette also said that both Carter and Binns should be back on the field soon.

Burlington Township has been shut out in consecutive weeks for the first time in 35 years, according to local historian Chuck Langerman. The Falcons were blanked in three straight games during that 1991 season against Florence, Cinnaminson and Delran.

Glassboro quarterback Charlie Foulke completed 16-of-29 passes for 207 yards but was held without a touchdown pass for the first time in his four games with his new team. He had thrown four TD passes in each of his first three starts after becoming eligible following his transfer from Philadelphia’s St. Joseph Prep.

Glassboro (6-1) will host Camden on Friday in a battle of defending state champions. It’s going to be an electric atmosphere in the Boro.

Burlington Township (4-3) will close out the regular season with two tough road games against Shawnee and Rancocas Valley.
