There wasn’t a moment since last December, not a single moment, where LSU didn’t do everything possible to make it work.

Spent hundreds of millions of dollars, and mortgaged a financial and structural future. Fired a coach, and gave another an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Gave him free reign over everything, and mimicked his every reckless lead.

Then the worst possible thing happened in the biggest moment of all. The Ole Miss game arrived, and LSU blinked.

That cold gumbo? Tastes a lot like Ole Miss 32, LSU 24.

It had to end this way, really. Had to wrap with Lane Kiffin, the man we love to hate yet secretly admire, skulking off the field he once made famous — with LSU a final drive shy of pulling off the damn thing.

Had to end with Ole Miss star quarterback Trinidad Chambliss — the one player Kiffin desperately wanted to join his band of modern day mercenaries, but couldn’t get — leaping into the stands at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium with his fourth win at Ole Miss when tied or trailing in the fourth quarter.

Had to end with LSU getting off the deck after a 24-7 halftime deficit, and have the ball with a chance to tie the score and send it into overtime. A tipped ball interception officially ended it, but the pieces were in place long ago for this meltdown.

The worst possible thing that could happen to LSU on Saturday happened. Now what?

Now where does LSU go after pumping every ounce of energy and drama into Kiffin’s triumphant return to Oxford, Miss., and the subsequent stroll of the conquering king that never materialized?

How does LSU now face a schedule that may be the toughest in the most difficult conference in college football? There’s Alabama and Texas and Tennessee, and suddenly, Mississippi State and Kentucky don’t look like pushovers anymore.

Star tight end Trey’Dez Green left the game in the fourth quarter with a lower body injury, and the offense quickly bogged down. The defense that looked unbreakable against Clemson and Louisiana Tech, couldn’t get off the field — despite star Ole Miss running back Kewan Lacy injuring his shoulder in the first half and never returning.

The $50 million roster built to not only win this game, but every other in the inevitable run to the greatest season in LSU history, has holes. Legit, problematic holes.

Pass protection is shaky, and quarterback Sam Leavitt can’t stop giving away turnovers. The secondary was chasing all game, and the pass rush — which led the nation in sacks coming into the game — struggled to get Chambliss off his mark.

These things are all correctable, all part of a season-long journey that didn’t end with a loss in the one moment LSU has built toward since Kiffin left Ole Miss holding a College Football Playoff bag last season. This was we LSU’s we got him, and you don’t moment.

It quickly evolved into the statement of statements for Ole Miss: We’ve got Chambliss, and you couldn’t convince him to follow Kiffin — no matter how much money you threw at him.

Yeah, it’s corny and contrived, but that’s football in the south. That’s how it works and how it bleeds and how it finally, fatefully, plays like you couldn’t script it if you were Hemingway himself.

The good guys win, and the villain is vanquished.

And chokes on cold gumbo all the way home.
