Lens stun PSG to lift Trophée des Champions

Lens stunned Paris Saint-Germain with a 1-0 victory in the Trophée des Champions, securing their first silverware of the new domestic campaign despite playing much of the contest with 10 men.

PSG started on the front foot and controlled the ball, but Lens gradually grew into the contest. The hosts then struck against the run of play in the 32nd minute, with Florian Thauvin arriving at the far post to convert Matthieu Udol‘s delivery.

Lens’ advantage was short on numbers, however, as Kyllian Antonio was dismissed six minutes before the interval for a dangerous challenge on Maghnes Akliouche. PSG almost took advantage immediately, but Désiré Doué saw his effort come back off the crossbar.

Luis Enrique’s side continued to dominate possession after the restart but struggled to turn it into clear openings. Ousmane Dembélé tested Robin Risser, while Nuno Mendes also went close from distance as Lens remained disciplined.

The Parisians’ hopes of finding a late leveller suffered another blow when Mendes was shown a straight red card for an off-the-ball incident involving Michal Skoras in the closing stages.

Lens held firm through the frantic finale to claim a memorable victory under new boss Dino Toppmöller.
