One could argue that a good portion of the Los Angeles Lakers‘ suspected trade targets are underrated, as they don’t receive the recognition they probably deserve.
Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley has a particular under-the-radar trade target he believes should be on the Lakers’ radar when the offseason commences. Specifically, Buckley named the Nuggets‘ 25-year-old NBA champion guard as an asset Los Angeles shouldn’t be reluctant to pursue.
“A trade for one of (Christian) Braun or (Cameron) Johnson, on the other hand, would be cheaper, more direct, and doable at any time,” Buckley wrote last Thursday. “It also might be the right time to acquire either at a bargain rate, since Braun is coming off such an injury-impacted year, while Johnson’s volume production backtracked in a big way following his trade from Brooklyn (Nets) to Denver.”
“Granted, that doesn’t make for the most encouraging sales pitch, but there are trustworthy track records behind both. Johnson has long made the league’s short list of high-end three-and-D wings. And Braun has made a big impact as a two-way energizer—while also converting 39.2% of his three-point looks over the previous two seasons combined.”
Braun took a noticeable step back this season in three primary categories: scoring, three-point shooting, and durability. The Kansas product missed 38 games due to injuries (which benefited breakout star Peyton Watson), and contributed 12.0 points (3.4 points per game decrease) while shooting a career worst 30.1% from beyond the arc.
That said, Braun has already exhibited his potential as a wiry wing who can finish above the rim in transition and shoot nearly 40% from deep (he averaged 15.4 points per game while shooting 58.0% from the field and 39.7% from long range with the Nuggets last season).
If the 6-foot-6 stud can return to that version of himself, he could unquestionably assist a Lakers squad that needs more multi-faceted wings.
