Apple TV is shaking things up with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 3.
Created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction, the Monsterverse series has filled in many of the lore gaps of the Legendary-produced kaiju franchise, primarily centering on Anna Sawai’s Cate, Kiersey Clemons’ May and Ren Watabe’s Kentaro as they seek to untangle the mysterious web of the eponymous organization and its ties to Godzilla, King Kong and more. Garnering largely positive reviews across its first two seasons, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters‘ future has been in question for some time.
Now, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, early talks are finally underway for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 3 to move forward with Legendary Television and Apple TV, albeit with plans to change the creative direction of the show. Sources report that a new team of writers will be brought onboard the Monsterverse series, with the status of its human characters, including Wyatt and Kurt Russell in their dual roles of a younger and older Lee Shaw, yet to be decided. The changes are currently said to not be affecting the planned Monarch prequel series at Apple TV led by the younger Russell.
The wait for any update on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 3 has proven a little longer for the series than before, as season 2 was greenlit just over three months after season 1’s finale. Moreover, the renewal came with the announcement of plans for multiple Monarch spinoffs, which eventually became the Russell-led spinoff, which is being showrun by Obi-Wan Kenobi alum Joby Harold, and expanded its cast list this past summer with everyone from Pilou Asbæk to Corey Stoll, Ralph Ineson and Connie Nielsen, among others.
While an overhaul in writing teams is not unheard of, the fact that season 3 could shift its focus to a new cast of characters is a surprising shift after Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2’s finale. The ending saw Amber Midthunder’s Isabel, who had been looking to utilize a pathway to Axis Mundi for time travel and had a form of control over Titan X, escape with Kentaro in tow, while May, Keiko and Cate were officially recruited into Monarch to hunt the pair down.
More notably, however, was that the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 ending saw Russell’s Shaw being hot on the tails of Isabel and Keiko, tracking them down to Thailand and seeing Rodan in a volcano in the area. This subsequently created a variety of questions regarding the fiery kaiju’s return, given Godzilla: King of the Monsters indicated it lived its entire life in a volcano in Isla de Mara, Mexico, while the 2017-set series would point to it either being a second Rodan, or that the creature uses pathways to Axis Mundi the way Titan X does.

With there still being many unanswered questions regarding the characters’ fates in the franchise, it would be disappointing for series fans if Monarch: Legacy of Monsters returned for season 3 without the humans that actually stood out as the better-received of the Monsterverse. For the time being, audiences can at least take comfort in the fact that Apple TV and Legendary aren’t giving up yet on the hit series.
