Keenan Allen and Deebo Samuel are two veteran players still on the free-agent market as NFL training camp nears.
Allen and Samuel are both past their primes and aren’t the same playmakers they once were. However, they can still be a viable contributors for teams in need of receiving talent.
Free agency should pick back up over the next few weeks as franchises look to put the final touches on their rosters ahead of training camp, and it sounds like Allen or Samuel could land with an AFC South team set to field a new-look receiver room.
Colts mulling adding veteran receiver
According to ESPN’s Stephen Holder, the Indianapolis Colts are considering making a move for a wide receiver. As of now, the Colts’ top three receivers are Alec Pierce, Josh Downs, and Ashton Dulin.
The team traded Michael Pittman Jr. to the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this offseason and haven’t done much to replace him. Holder specifically mentioned Allen and Samuel as possible options for Indianapolis.
“The Colts are still mulling a potential roster move at receiver, with remaining free agent options including Keenan Allen and Deebo Samuel,” Holder said.
Signing Allen or Samuel would be a logical move by the Colts. General manager Chris Ballard can’t trust Dulin to be the WR3 for quarterback Daniel Jones, and adding a savvy veteran pass-catcher with years of experience would greatly benefit the offense.
Allen and Samuel have the versatility to play in the slot and on the outside, and both should also come for around the same price range.
Allen was a tad more productive last season, tallying 81 receptions for 777 yards and four touchdowns with the Los Angeles Chargers. Samuel had 727 yards on 72 catches and five touchdowns.
Overall, Indianapolis’s offensive identity is running the ball with dynamic running back Jonathan Taylor. However, the passing game needs to step up for the Colts to compete for a playoff spot in a loaded AFC, so they should look into signing either Allen or Samuel to help out Jones.
