The Brooklyn Nets have the No. 6 overall pick in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft so most of the attention paid to them will be as the result of who they choose with their first-round pick. Brooklyn also has two second-round picks and will be evaluating players after the draft is over and it looks like another player is on the slate to work out for the Nets.
“I’m just trying to show my best to all these teams that invited me to work out, thank the man above, and I’m just trying to get a shot,” Kansas guard Melvin Council Jr. said after his pre-draft workout with the Indiana Pacers on Thursday. Council hasn’t been mentioned in any of the mock drafts that cover all 60 picks, but this is the perfect time for him to show what he can do to potentially be signed as an undrafted free-agent.
“My ability to make others around me good, just being a pass-first point guard and scoring when I need to, and just being a pest on defense,” Council said when asked what parts of his game will translate to the NBA level. Council mentioned later in his interview that he has other workout scheduled throughout the month, including with Brooklyn on Jun. 8.
Council, 24, is coming off a solid senior season with the Jayhawks playing alongside draft prospects in Darryn Peterson and Flory Bidunga that allowed himself the chance to flourish in the ways he’s comfortable with. During his senior year with Kansas, Council averaged 12.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game while shooting 39.2% from the field and 30.8% from behind the three-point line.
“A 6-foot-3.75 guard in shoes with a 6-foot-9.5 wingspan, Council’s length gives him legitimate two-way upside that translates against bigger competition. The outside shot is still a work in progress, but if it continues to develop, there is a real path to an NBA roster spot,” Cyro Asseo wrote for HoopsHype when evaluating Council, who played so well during the Portsmouth Invitational that he earned an invite to the G League Combine in May.
