MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — “Hey Jude” was the song of the night at Miami Stadium.
England midfielder Jude Bellingham, who England fans serenade with The Beatles’ 1968 hit, scored twice to send England to the World Cup semifinals with a 2-1, extra-time victory over upstart Norway.
Bellingham has four goals in England’s last two matches.
The victory sends England to the semifinals. It will play the winner of Argentina-Switzerland, which will be played late Saturday night. England advanced to the World Cup semifinals only three times before this year’s tournament.
Miami Stadium appeared full to capacity, as it has been for its previous World Cup matches. A majority of the people in attendance were England fans, who draped the interior walls of the stadium with flags that had the names of their club teams on them.
England dominated possession early and had the first few opportunities of the game. Norway appeared content to defend, hoping to strike on a counter-attack. After Norway fouled Bellingham about midway through the first half, striker Harry Kane took a dangerous free kick. But the Bayern Munich star and England’s all-time leading scorer sent his kick above the goal.
Although England looked like the more dangerous team to start, Norway got on the board first. After a couple of threatening attempts from star striker Erling Haaland, midfielder Andreas Schjelderup fired in a shot in the 36th minute that sailed past English goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and banged off the post and into the net for the game’s first goal.
Norway had several more chances over the following few minutes, but England leveled the game in stoppage time. England midfielder Elliot Anderson brought the ball up the field and passed to winger Anthony Gordon. Gordon, a standout for Newcastle, placed a pass at Bellingham’s feet at the top of the box, and the Real Madrid star dribbled around a pair of defenders before finding the net.
The English goal came after the ball appeared to hit a camera cable on a goal kick from Norwegian goalkeeper Orjan Nyland, according to a replay shown on the Fox broadcast. The deflection helped England possess the ball and set up the score.
Norway appeared to take the lead back when Torbjorn Heggem, a defender who plays for Bologna FC, scored off a corner, but the goal was overturned when reviewed due to a foul by Haaland.
Both sides had chances through the second half, but neither could get the advantage before extra time. Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers fired a long-range shot. Nyland deflected it but allowed a rebound, giving Bellingham a chance to score the game-winning goal.
