Denver Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper was given additional charges on Friday to go along with the charges from his domestic violence arrest last week.

Cooper pled not guilty to three charges in a Colorado court on Monday, but he now faces four new charges and was taken back into custody on Thursday night.

The Broncos are aware of the incident and are monitoring Cooper’s status.

“We are disappointed to learn of Jonathon Cooper’s arrest on Thursday and continue to review this matter,” the team said in a statement.

Cooper was back in court on Friday morning and has both a hearing and a jury selection scheduled for July. Here’s a look at the charges that Cooper faces.

Jonathon Cooper arrest details

Cooper and his girlfriend were both arrested on June 4 after they had an argument that turned physical and damaged cell phones. Cooper’s girlfriend reportedly approached Cooper over cheating allegations, and after his girlfriend threw his cell phone at the wall, Cooper allegedly grabbed her to get the phone back.

According to the affidavit, Cooper “braced his neck against [her] neck to prevent her from getting his phone.” Cooper’s girlfriend also alleges that Cooper held her off the ground by her neck on a wall for about a minute before throwing her to the ground and punching a wall.

Officer Victoria Rodriguez took the girlfriend’s statement and said there were some inconsistencies with her story compared to her physical injuries. Cooper was released from Jail on June 5.

Jonathon Cooper charges

Domestic Violence

Cooper faces two charges of misdemeanor domestic violence from his initial arrest stemming from an argument he got into with his girlfriend that got physical. The punishment in Colorado depends on the class of domestic violence, but could require jail time of up to a year, probation and fines.

Criminal Mischief

Cooper’s other initial charge was misdemeanor criminal mischief, which also comes with possible jail time and fines.

Second-degree assault by strangulation

Cooper now faces a felony charge for second-degree assault by strangulation from the same initial arrest. The felony charge comes with a potential prison sentence depending on how the charge is classified. This is filed under a domestic violence charge.

Third-degree assault – knowingly or recklessly causing bodily injury

Cooper’s third-degree assault charge is a misdemeanor for “knowingly or recklessly causing bodily injury.” This charge comes with jail time of up to a year along with possible probation and fines, and is also filed as a domestic violence charge.

Harassment – repeated phone calls

Another new charge for Cooper is harassment for repeated phone calls. Colorado says that Cooper is charged for “Mak[ing] a telephone call or caus[ing] a telephone to ring repeatedly, whether or not a conversation ensues, with no purpose of legitimate conversation.”

Violation of a protection order

Cooper does face one civil charge for violating a protection order. This charge comes with a range of punishments depending on its class.

Who is Jonathon Cooper’s girlfriend?

Cooper’s girlfriend is Jade Fiegen, and she was booked alongside Cooper for her own set of domestic violence and criminal mischief charges.
