Johnson, McMenemy-Hoang, Melbourne, Satellite win conference gold

MELBOURNE — The 2026 Cape Coast Conference Championships took place at Wickham Park on Oct. 24 as the sun rose.

In the boys race, Rockledge senior Brody Johnson eked out senior teammate Noah Childrey for the conference title. Johnson recorded a time of 15:47.3 to beat Childrey by 1.1 seconds.

“It’s great. I feel so accomplished,” Johnson said. “That was one of my major goals this year to come out for conference and just give it my all. That’s pretty sweet.”

The conference meet was the first time Johnson finished under 16 minutes in a race this season.

“I knew it was going to be me and Noah (Childrey). I didn’t expect Charles (Hanus) to be up there, so kudos to him. That was a great performance by him,” Johnson said. “I knew he was very happy. I just wanted to run with Noah and it be a team effort. At the end, I knew I just had to give it everything.”

In the previous two conference meets, Johnson didn’t medal. His caps his final conference race with his first medal being gold.

Johnson posted his fifth top-three finish of the season and his third gold medal in the last four meets. The senior turns his attention to districts on Nov. 7 to begin his pursuit of a first-career state medal.

“It’s been pretty good, especially the beginning. Last week I didn’t do great and the first race this season, but the other races were phenomenal,” Johnson said. “I was very happy with them. I’m where I wanted to be. For conference, to be in the 15s so that was one of biggest goals this season.”

Melbourne repeated as the boys Cape Coast Conference team champion. The Bulldogs scored 41 points to defeat runner-up Rockledge by 15 points.

The Bulldogs finished with four runners in the top 10. Senior Charles Hanus placed fourth, junior Trent Orcutt finished fifth, junior Colin Hedgespeth ended in eighth and senior Maxwell Fernandez crossed the finish line in 10th.

Raiders sophomore Jaxon Carter was the third Rockledge runner to complete the race with a ninth-place finish.

“It feels really good. Really happy with that,” McMenemy-Hoang said. “Good time and a new PR for me, so I was really happy with that too.”

McMenemy-Hoang once again squared off with West Shore junior Selah Vignier down the home stretch. The senior bested Vignier by 0.5 seconds. It’s the second time this season they finished one and two.

“I didn’t really want to go out too fast, especially the last few races I feel like I got passed specifically by Selah (Vignier) because I raced against her like five times this season,” McMenemy-Hoang said. “I wanted to sit with her for most of the race. I think we really push each other. I think she’s PR’d most of her races and now I finally PR’d again.”

McMenemy-Hoang steadily decreased her times in every meet as she earned her third gold medal of the season.

“I think it went good. I improved a lot and built a lot more endurance and speed stuff so it was really good,” McMenemy-Hoang said. “I feel good. I feel like I’ll finally break 18 one of these meets coming up, so I’m excited for that.”

Satellite freshman Olivia Davis took home bronze, sophomore Zuzanna Galant placed 10th and freshman Mitra Burr ended 11th. Melbourne junior Savannah Thomson crossed the finish line in seventh and sophomore Kaylynn Ulrich ended the meet in ninth.
