John Harbaugh tried to break the NFL trade code to steal Jeffery Simmons, and he failed. The Giants head coach called Tennessee owner Amy Adams Strunk directly to force a deal, bypassing the general managers. This move violated the unwritten rule that football decisions happen between GMs, not owners. Sports Mockery reported that Harbaugh ignored the process because he felt desperate after trading Dexter Lawrence.
Harbaugh’s gambit backfired spectacularly. Instead of Simmons wearing a Giants jersey, the star defensive tackle now plays for Chicago. The Bears paid a heavy price to secure him, sending their 2027 and 2028 first-round picks plus a fourth-rounder to Tennessee. Per the Associated Press, Chicago also received a fifth-round selection in 2028 as part of the package. The Giants got nothing because the owner refused to overstep her GM, Mike Borgonzi.
Simmons Brings Immediate Firepower
This trade changes the defensive landscape for the Bears instantly. Simmons is a four-time Pro Bowler who dominates offensive lines with pure strength. He logged four pressures against double teams, the most by any player this season, proving his worth. The rest of the Bears defense combined for only 14 such pressures. That gap proves why GM Ryan Poles paid the high cost to get him.
Simmons wasted no time setting a new tone in the locker room. He told his new teammates that if he draws double teams, they must get to the quarterback. This isn’t a player who will ease into the system. He wants to win now. “This team believes in what they have here, and they want it right now,” Simmons said. He added, “My game, my passion, my energy, my leadership, I can only help this team even more than what it’s got.”
The Cost of Winning Now
Poles believes this move is essential for a Super Bowl run. He noted that every championship team since 2018 has a specific type of interior lineman. “If you do the research, Super Bowl teams, you go back to 2018, since then they all have what we call a red-level interior defensive lineman,” Poles said Friday. “So in order to get to that, you need one, I really believe that.”
The Bears face their next test on Monday, Nov. 2, against the Seattle Seahawks. Simmons is still learning the playbook but is ready to play. He admitted he is trying to catch up with the game plan for this first week. Harbaugh’s attempt to cheat the system gave the Bears exactly what they needed. Now the rest of the league has to deal with the new reality in Chicago.
