The New York Jets have continued to show they don’t know what they’re doing at quarterback. While there’s a hope and expectation that Geno Smith will be the guy in New York, there’s certainly no guarantee that he’s going to be that. Smith hasn’t looked great in some practices, and he’s also been dealing with a small injury.
Right now, the Jets can only hope he plays at the level he did with the Seattle Seahawks a few years ago.
At the same time, even if Smith does play well, he isn’t exactly a guaranteed future quarterback. He’s getting up there in age, so if he has another year or two left, that would be more than the Jets are probably even looking for.
New York will be searching for a long-term option, and it might find one in a former quarterback they thought would be that guy years ago.
One reporter recently predicted that Sam Darnold wouldn’t be on the team in 2028 and beyond, despite just winning a Super Bowl last season.
“Darnold will not be on the Seahawks in 2028,” Seth Walder wrote. “He started last season red-hot and finished fairly strong in Seattle’s Super Bowl run.
“But from Weeks 10 to 18, he ranked 27th out of 30 quarterbacks in QBR. The Super Bowl win certainly will buy Darnold time. But if he stumbles in 2027, I don’t think there are guarantees that he will be re-signed.”
While a lot would have to happen for the Jets to find themselves in this situation, New York should view it positively.
The idea that Darnold can be with the organization should never be viewed as a bad one, as he’d be a lot better than what they currently have and have had in the past.
