The Milwaukee Brewers just won the World Series, but there are rumors that World Series MVP William Contreras could get traded this offseason.
These rumors are not out of left field. He has one year left before hitting free agency, and history suggests that the Brewers would consider dealing him before he walks and they get nothing. They did so with Josh Hader, Freddy Peralta, Devin Williams and even Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes.
Contreras is one of the best catchers in the game, and his price on the open market will surely be more than what the Brewers typically pay. However, trading him after winning the World Series seems foolish, and Jeff Passan made it clear the Brewers will not do that.
“William Contreras isn’t going anywhere even though he is nearing free agency,” Passan wrote on Monday for ESPN.

Contreras seems to be getting the same treatment Willy Adames got in his final year before free agency. The Brewers knew he was too valuable to the culture, and they did not have a replacement ready. They are in a similar boat with Contreras.
However, Contreras could be a rare exception to their spending rules. Christian Yelich’s contract will expire in a few years, and the Brewers will have room to pay a star player. Jackson Chourio, Cooper Pratt and Luis Lara are under contract for years to come, and Jesús Made is expected to sign an extension soon as well.
They can certainly afford to pay Contreras if they want. Whether they do remains to be seen, but it seems like they will at least let him play out his final season before free agency.
