Days after one of the biggest moves of the NBA this offseason, Jaylen Brown is still trying to come to terms with it.
In a trade that shocked the NBA world, the Boston Celtics traded Brown to their division rival, the Philadelphia 76ers. Interestingly, the 76ers were the ones to knock the Celtics out of the playoffs last season.
After spending a decade in Boston, developing from the third overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft into one of their franchise’s defining players, the unexpected trade brought the chapter to an abrupt end.
Brown’s Departure Stunned Fans As the Celtics Lost Far More Than a Scorer
Brown’s reaction echoed the emotions of many Celtics fans, who were equally surprised to see one half of Boston’s long-standing star duo (The Jays) moved to a division rival.
The 29-year-old was a driving force behind Boston’s 2024 NBA championship, while earning the NBA Finals MVP honors. Over the past several seasons, Brown helped the Celtics make 10 consecutive playoff runs, establishing themselves as contenders in the Eastern Conference.
Brown also delivered arguably the best regular season stats of his career in 2025-26, averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists while finishing sixth in the NBA MVP voting. Those numbers only added to the surprise surrounding Boston’s decision to move on from the franchise star.
A New Challenge Awaits in Philadelphia
While Brown admitted to still processing the trade, his focus now shifts to helping the 76ers compete for a championship.
Philadelphia is betting that the Finals MVP’s two-way impact and playoff experience can elevate a roster already built to contend. As difficult as the move may be to accept, Brown now has an opportunity to write the next chapter of his career with another Eastern Conference heavyweight.
