Indiana Fever star Kelsey Mitchell’s win for Eastern Conference Player of the Month for July 2026 led to Jason Whitlock having only one word in response.
Mitchell averaged 27.2 points on 49.5% from the field and 46.1% from three over 10 games in July, leading the Fever to an 8-2 record with Caitlin Clark by her side.
Clark was among the leading contenders to win the award for the month, with many surprised that Mitchell won it despite Clark winning two Player of the Week awards.

Veteran media personality Jason Whitlock shared his reaction to Mitchell beating out Clark for that award with a one-word response, supporting Mitchell after her first-ever Player of the Month win.
“Awesome.”
The 30-year-old Mitchell has averaged 24.0 points on 50.2% from the field and 43.8% from three this season, being named an All-Star and considered an MVP candidate on the 19-11 Fever.
Did Fever’s Kelsey Mitchell deserve to win over Caitlin Clark?
Clark averaged an impressive 22.6 points, 7.5 assists, and 4.3 rebounds on 48.6% from the field and 37.9% from three over July, and was the recipient of the award in the Eastern Conference in June as well.
Mitchell’s scoring impact is greatly boosted by Clark’s presence, as Mitchell has been a consistent All-Star since Clark was drafted. However, her scoring efficiency in July was incredible.
Clark has had some impressive games, but she’s also underperformed with inefficient shooting, especially in the first half of the month. She also missed two games, both wins for the Fever behind Mitchell.
Mitchell has played with metronomic consistency over the last month. The Fever veteran scored 20+ points and made 3+ three-pointers in each game in July.
She also set the record for most consecutive games with 3+ three-pointers made, with the 10 games in July extending her streak to 14 games.
The two will compete against each other for MVP as well, but might fall behind their rivals in the Western Conference like A’ja Wilson.
Nonetheless, the Mitchell-Clark backcourt is running roughshod over the East.
