A dynamite Jameis Winston performance against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday would’ve done a lot to make the New York Giants and their fans feel better about Jaxson Dart’s devastating, season-ending knee injury.
They, uh, did not get that.
Winston more or less picked up where he left off after filling in for Dart during the Giants’ Week 2 Monday night loss to the Los Angeles Rams. That is to say, he was awful, going just 14-of-22 for 118 yards (5.36 yards per attempt). Winston only had two completions of at least 10 yards on the afternoon. Overall, the Winston-led Giants offense was just 4-of-13 on third down, averaged only 4.1 yards per play, and finished with a paltry 12 points.
And how did Winston choose to discuss the Giants’ listless offensive performance that got bailed out by Cam Ward’s game-losing pick? He made a corny joke about how the Giants’ terrible 12-point output was a tribute to Dart by multiplying his No. 6 jersey number by two. Woof. How “epic.” I would advise that Winston read the room in New York before leaning on his customary silly guy shtick moving forward:

I won’t pretend to speak for the entire Giants fanbase (or, privately, any members of the coaching staff or Winston’s teammates). But I’d be pretty shocked if Winston trying to be funny resonates as much with folks when he’s playing like one of the league’s worst quarterbacks in relief of someone people associated with the Giants think is the quarterback of the future.
One more stinker from Winston, and don’t be surprised if the Giants move to replace him in earnest. Heck, I’d be shocked if they didn’t try to replace him this week after his miserable play against the Titans. He’d do well to lock in and try to play better rather than force jokes that might get a pity laugh from folks at best.
