Jalen Hurts didn’t attend the premiere of “Saban,” the ESPN documentary, in Tuscaloosa Thursday, Oct. 3. But the former Alabama football quarterback’s presence was felt.
Shortly after the crowd was shown a clip of Hurts being benched for Tua Tagovailoa in the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship Game against Georgia, Terry Saban, known affectionately as Miss Terry, said before her and Nick Saban left for the premiere, a bouquet of white roses was delivered to the house to celebrate the premiere from Hurts.
“Coach Saban, thank you for the opportunity to be a part of your story,” Miss Terry read. “…I’m honored to share a small moment in your and Miss Terry’s story.”
After starting for the Crimson Tide in 2017, Hurts, who completed three-of-eight pass attempts for 21 yards against the Bulldogs in the CFP National Championship, was replaced by Tagovailoa when Alabama was trailing 13-0 at halftime. Tagovailoa led Alabama on a 26-10 second-half run to secure Nick Saban’s sixth national championship and fifth national championship with Alabama.
On the red carpet before the premiere, Saban said he was proud for many moments that players responded, but “none more than the way Jalen Hurts responded.”
“It’s very understated the way Jalen Hurts, the character that he showed, the kind of person that he is, the kind of competitor that he is, the kind of teammate that he was is the way he handled that situation,” Saban said. “I mean, it’s pretty unique and people should appreciate that a lot more, and it should really get a lot more attention. He set a great example.”
