Matthias Jaissle said he is “in love” with Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall, who appears set to sign a new contract after being targeted by Manchester United in the summer.
Hall was tipped to move to Old Trafford during the recent transfer window, after Newcastle sanctioned the sales of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.
The 22-year-old eventually stayed put, though, and widespread reports on Thursday said he had agreed a new contract in principle, to run until 2031.
Since joining the Magpies from Chelsea in 2023, initially on loan, Hall has made 107 appearances for the club in all competitions, 80 of which have been starts.
He has three goals and eight assists for Newcastle, and 2025-26 saw him make 46 appearances and 35 starts – both of which were his best figures in a single campaign – as they finished 12th in the Premier League and reached the round of 16 in the Champions League.
Hall has also started all five of Newcastle’s games in all competitions since Jaissle took charge, supplying two assists in the season’s early weeks.
“Without speaking about his contract, I can just say that I’m in love with what I’ve seen so far from him,” Jaissle said ahead of Monday’s trip to Leeds United, as quoted by The Mirror.
“He’s an amazing player with huge potential still, and this makes me so happy to, hopefully, have him here for the next few years in the long term.
“He’s fitting so good with this identity, with how we want to play football, and he’s doing an excellent job.”

Newcastle, EFL Cup winners under Eddie Howe in 2025, progressed to the last 16 of that competition by beating Millwall 1-0 on Tuesday.
Hall’s fellow full-back, Tino Livramento, played 45 minutes from the bench after returning from a calf injury that ended his hopes of representing England at the World Cup.
And Jaissle was delighted by the level shown by the 23-year-old, saying: “I’m happy for him that he got now 45 minutes at a high level, against a strong opponent in difficult circumstances.
“That makes us proud to see him already on a high level, it’s never easy coming back from a long-term injury then performing in a mature way. It means our performance department did an excellent job.”
Both Leeds and Newcastle are unbeaten in the Premier League ahead of their clash at Elland Road on Monday, taking five points apiece from three games this season.
But Newcastle have faced more shots than any other side in the Premier League this term (61), averaging 20.3 per game. No side has ever faced 20+ shots per game across a full campaign on record (since 2003-04).
They have also had just eight shots on target in 2026-27, overperforming their expected goals (xG) figures by a greater margin than any other team in the division (3 xG, six goals).
