Jaguars make roster moves at cornerback as training camp begins

The Jacksonville Jaguars have made a move at cornerback prior to training camp beginning.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jaguars are signing veteran cornerback Corey Ballentine and placing Dane Jackson on the reserve/retired list.

Jackson was a late addition to the offseason roster, joining the team in early June. The 2026 season was going to be his seventh in the NFL.

Ballentine was a sixth-round pick by the New York Giants in 2019. He has also spent time in Green Bay, Indianapolis, New England, and Dallas. Ballentine was with the Packers during the 2024 season when Anthony Campanile was the linebackers coach.

During his career, Ballentine has appeared in 75 games, which includes making 11 starts. Of his 1,054 career defensive snaps, 534 came during the 2023 season with Green Bay. He has primarily been a special teams contributor when on a 53-man roster.

As an outside cornerback, Ballentine has allowed a career completion rate of 65% at 12.6 yards per catch. He has one interception and six pass breakups.

Ballentine has also played 941 career special teams snaps, regularly contributing to four of the six different phases. Last season, between his time with New England and Dallas, he appeared in six games, playing 67 snaps.

He provides added depth with Jackson retiring, along with experience on the back end of the cornerback room, which Jacksonville does not have a lot of beyond the top four spots on the depth chart.

It won’t be easy. At the top of the cornerback depth chart are Travis Hunter, Montaric Brown, Jourdan Lewis, and Jarrian Jones. That leaves one to two roster spots up for grabs on the final 53-man, depending on whether the Jaguars keep five or six players, with Christian Braswell and Jabbar Muhammad the early favorites for those spots.

That said, Ballentine’s special teams experience can be a differentiator.
