Former 10th overall pick J.J. McCarthy has been a polarizing prospect during his two years in the NFL. There does not appear to be a middle ground in terms of his potential and performance, as people believe he is a bust or a future star who needs more development. Well, according to one former NFL General Manager, he is destined for the bench.
The worst part is that Scot McCloughan, former San Francisco 49ers GM, wasn’t even talking about McCarthy when he called him a “career backup”. McCarthy caught this stray while McCloughan was talking about Los Angeles Rams‘ first-round pick Ty Simpson.
“I think the quarterback from Alabama was overdrafted,” he said. “Not being a guru, but he’s like J.J. McCarthy. He’s like Mac Jones. He’s a career backup. Ideally, he might start, but that’s because where his pick was, and they want to prove everybody right. That’s not the way you should build a roster. Not at all.”

While my opinion does side more with McCloughan, the fact that McCarthy was randomly brought up while talking about Simpson is a bit crazy. While there are parallels between both prospects, McCarthy at least has more upside than Simpson, even if both players may have limited ceilings.
