Is Brandon Aiyuk even worth the risk for the Washington Commanders?

It’s safe to say the relationship between the San Francisco 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk has completely deteriorated, and it’s unlikely we’ll see him back in uniform and playing for San Francisco. And while there may be plenty of teams that could use a receiver as talented as Aiyuk, it’s uncertain whether he’s worth the baggage he brings.

Aiyuk seems to have a clear destination in mind, as he has been pushing to land with the Washington Commanders, repeatedly claiming that is where he wants to sign. But no moves have been made on the part of the Commanders to acquire him yet, and one is left to wonder if Washington is willing to take the risk on Aiyuk.

Part of the reason the relationship between Aiyuk and the Niners fell apart was that Aiyuk basically disappeared despite being under contract. Kyle Shanahan said they hadn’t seen Aiyuk in “forever” last December, despite the fact that the franchise planned to have him back on the field after an injury.

The star wideout has continued to attack the 49ers on social media in recent months and has expressed his desire to join the Commanders. Still, he recently went viral for another social media outburst in which he attacked Washington’s starting quarterback, Jayden Daniels, and his former teammates at Arizona State. The pair also no longer follow each other on Instagram.

Yes, Aiyuk is talented. He was a first-round draft selection in 2020, and he has tallied two 1,000-yard receiving seasons so far in his NFL career. But his relationship with Washington’s quarterback seems to be rocky at best, and Aiyuk is likely now viewed as a potential risk to have on the roster given how last season played out in San Francisco. With these factors combined with his propensity for online outbursts, Washington should probably pass on bringing Aiyuk in. The potential problems well outweigh the potential rewards.
