Liverpool Punished by Set-Piece Chaos in Fenerbahce Defeat

Liverpool left Istanbul with a familiar sense of disorder, beaten 3-2 by Fenerbahce in a match that exposed the fragility of Andoni Iraola’s side when the game turned noisy, fast and untidy. For long spells there was enough in Liverpool’s attacking play to suggest control, yet the defining theme of the evening was how quickly that control dissolved.

Trey Nyoni and Alexander Isak each found the net for Liverpool, but their goals were gradually erased by a succession of preventable concessions. Mason Greenwood and Archie Brown struck for the home side before Vedat Muriqi settled the contest with a late header, a conclusion that felt wholly in keeping with the way the game had tilted. Liverpool had moments of poise, though Fenerbahce sensed vulnerability every time the ball went dead.

Iraola’s frustration was plain enough afterwards. “(They were) cheap goals. Messy goals.” It was a concise judgement, and a fair one. The free-kick was allowed to creep through, the second goal arrived amid uncertainty in Liverpool’s own area, and the winner came from a long throw that should have been managed with considerably more authority.

Set-pieces decide Liverpool defeat

What will concern Iraola most is that Fenerbahce’s route to goal was hardly disguised. The Turkish side leaned into one of the oldest truths of European football, that a fierce home atmosphere and a sequence of restarts can make even accomplished teams appear hesitant. Liverpool looked exactly that. Defensive distances became ragged, marking grew loose and second balls repeatedly belonged to the hosts.

The head coach pointed, too, to the conditions inside the stadium. “In the stadium it was almost impossible to communicate, it was difficult for me to give instructions and the communication was difficult between Cody and Ali.” That explanation carries weight in such an environment, though elite sides are ultimately judged on their capacity to retain clarity amid commotion.

Istanbul atmosphere unsettles Iraola side

This was Liverpool’s second successive defeat, after the 1-0 loss against Arsenal, and another European game in which they conceded three times. The pattern matters more than the scoreline alone. Iraola’s team have often looked well drilled domestically, particularly defending set-pieces, but this was an evening when structure gave way to improvisation.

Kostas Tsimikas reached a similar conclusion, saying: “We didn’t defend after the goal we conceded. After three or four minutes, automatically, we conceded another goal. I think we have to mark better if we want to win games.” That sequence, the inability to restore order after setbacks, remains at the heart of Liverpool’s problem.

p style=”text-align:justify”>For Fenerbahce, led from the dugout by former Liverpool favourite Dirk Kuyt, this was a night of conviction and persistence. For Liverpool, it was another uncomfortable lesson in how quickly European matches can be lost when restarts are mishandled. Crystal Palace await on Sunday, and Iraola will know the issue now demands a response.
