<p>Champions Tour rookie and Iowa golf icon Zach Johnson won the Principal Charity Classic on June 14 at Wakonda Club in Des Moines.</p>
<p>The Iowa City native, Cedar Rapids Regis alum and former Drake golfer beat Richard Green and Retief Goosen by four strokes to claim the championship in his first year on the Champions Tour.</p>
<p>Johnson finished with a 17-under-par score of 199 after shooting a 5-under 67 in Sunday&#8217;s final round.</p>
<p>Johnson, 50, is best-known for winning the 2007 Masters. He added another major championship in 2015 when he won the British Open. He was ranked as high as No. 6 in the world in 2014.</p>
<p>A 12-time winner on the PGA Tour, Johnson&#8217;s win in Des Moines was his second on the Champions Tour. He won the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational on March 8.</p>
<p>Johnson shot 3-under-par 69 in Friday&#8217;s opening round before a scorching-hot 63 on Saturday at Wakonda.</p>
<p>Johnson&#8217;s 63 was the low score of the day Saturday. He hit 17 of 18 greens during the second round.</p>
<p>&#8220;Yeah, and the one green I missed, I was trying to make an eagle and I hit it to about two feet,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;Yeah, I did everything pretty solid (Saturday). I drove it great, hit a lot of crisp iron shots. &#8230; I hit the ball nice and gave myself opportunities, that&#8217;s all you can ask for.&#8221;</p>
<p>Johnson entered Sunday&#8217;s round round tied with Brett Quigley and Scott Hend at 12-under.</p>
