The Boston Celtics could not win the sweepstakes for Giannis Antetokounmpo with their Jaylen Brown-centered offer, but that does not mean Brown is a lock to be a Celtic next season.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Celtics could trade Brown before Tuesday night’s NBA Draft, and teams could start a bidding war for the Celtics star.
“They, of course, knew it was possible they were going to lose to Miami,” Windhorst said on “Get Up” on Tuesday. “They wanted to win. They made a very strong offer, but they were not willing to put their entire team in. They were not willing to put other pieces in, because on the other side of this trade, they had to have a team. Now, what I expect to happen is a bidding war for Jaylen Brown. In the most recent days, teams have been preparing for this eventuality. That is wouldn’t be the Boston Celtics who won the Giannis sweepstakes, and there would be a Jaylen Brown market. We’re now going to watch that. I think it’ll take time to play out, but if there’s a draft pick involved, that could happen today.”
It’s no secret that the Celtics are willing to part with Brown for the right player. They reportedly offered him up for Kevin Durant to the Brooklyn Nets and now for Antetokounmpo. Even though there is reportedly no friction between Brown and the Celtics, Windhorst noted that the Celtics clearly do not think their team is good enough right now, which is why they entered the Antetokounmpo trade market.
“The Celtics made him available because they did not believe they were good enough,” Windhorst said on “Get Up” on Tuesday. “They aren’t like, ‘We really loved Giannis.’ They were like, ‘Our team isn’t good enough,’ so now they are going to look and see if they can make another move. By the way, there were other bidders for Giannis that did not make the final two. Those bidders will now turn their attention to Jaylen Brown, I suspect.”
