Insider: Green Bay Packers betting big on Christian Watson’s untapped potential after $110.5 million payday

The Green Bay Packers caught plenty of people by surprise when they handed Christian Watson a four-year, $110.5 million contract extension.

Despite the hefty price tag, Green Bay clearly views Watson as a key piece of its offense moving forward. While the size of the deal raised some eyebrows, team reporter Mike Spofford believes the investment could prove worthwhile if Watson develops as the Packers expect.

“He’s not getting paid for what he’s done. He’s getting paid for what the Packers expect him to do,” wrote the Packers insider in his article.

During his first four seasons with the Packers, the 27-year old has totaled 133 receptions for 2,264 yards and 20 touchdowns. Although consistency has occasionally been an issue, he has shown plenty of big-play potential throughout his career. His strongest campaign came as a rookie when he posted career bests of 41 catches, 611 receiving yards, and seven touchdowns. He also delivered a productive 2025 season, finishing with 35 receptions for 611 yards and six scores.

Does Christian Watson deserve his new contract with the Green Bay Packers?

“There’s also ample evidence how different this offense is with him versus without him, due to how defenses react to his presence. That doesn’t show up in his statistics. I believe the only reason he didn’t hit $30M APY is his injury history. Is there risk here? Sure. There’s risk in every big contract in such a violent sport. But right now the Packers have the receiving trio of Watson, Jayden Reed and Matthew Golden locked up for the next 3-4 years. That sounds like a pretty good spot to be in.”

Durability has been the biggest obstacle in Watson’s career so far. He has yet to play a full season and has been limited to 10 games or fewer on two occasions. Most recently, his 2025 campaign was cut short as he continued working his way back from a torn ACL.

The Packers remain confident that Christian Watson can play a major role in their offense. As Green Bay looks to take the next step and make a deeper postseason run in 2026, the organization is counting on Watson’s ability to stretch the field and create explosive plays. If Jordan Love and Watson can consistently connect in the passing game, the Packers believe it will significantly boost their chances of success.
