Inside the lives of the billionaire Walmart heirs

· · 5 min read
  • The Walmart heirs’ combined estimated net worth is over $475 billion.
  • All three of Sam Walton’s surviving children have made it well into the $100 billion club.
  • The Waltons maintain a low public profile despite their massive wealth.

Walmart’s share price has risen in 2026 so far, up 16% as of the beginning of November. After a weaker performance between May and August this year, the stock is rising again, which some analysts say could be due to lower consumer confidence.

Forbes estimates that the combined wealth of the Walmart heirs — including founder Sam Walton’s children, Rob, Jim, and Alice, as well as his grandson, Lukas — is about $487 billion as of November 5. In Rob and Jim’s case, Forbes ties their wealth to their immediate family.

In 2024, the Walton children expanded voting control to their own offspring, giving eight of Sam’s grandchildren a say in the family holdings.

About 44% of Walmart’s shares are owned by entities related to Sam Walton’s family.

Here’s a look at how the Walton family empire spends its money:

Sam Walton opened the first Walmart store in Rogers, Arkansas, in 1962.

He married Helen Robson on Valentine’s Day in 1943.

Together, they had four children: Rob, John, Jim, and Alice.

He structured the ownership of Walmart stock through a family partnership.

Each of his children held 20% of Walton Enterprises, while he and Helen each held 10%, according to Fortune. Helen inherited Sam’s 10% tax-free when he died.

By the time Sam died in 1992, he had structured the company’s ownership to minimize the estate taxes anyone on the receiving end would have to pay.

Samuel Robson “Rob” Walton is the oldest of the Walton children. He is 82 years old.

Rob Walton and his immediate family have an estimated net worth of $148 billion as of November 4, according to Forbes.

He served as chairman of Walmart from 1992 until 2015 and remained on the board until 2024.

Rob made a splash in 2022 by leading an ownership group to buy the Denver Broncos.

The group purchased the NFL team for $4.7 billion in the summer of 2022, a record-breaking sale at the time.

In 2023, Rob Walton’s son-in-law Greg Penner became the designated controlling owner of the Denver Broncos.

Rob has purchased a house in Paradise Valley, Arizona, near the base of Camelback Mountain.

In the past, protesters have rallied outside his Arizona home to advocate for increased wages and added benefits for Walmart workers.

Besides real estate, Rob has a large collection of vintage cars.

Sam Walton’s second-oldest child, John Walton, died in a plane crash in 2005.

After serving in Vietnam as a Green Beret, John returned and held a series of jobs with Walmart.

Some of John’s roles included Walmart company pilot, crop duster, and owner of a few yachting companies, before becoming a Walmart board member, according to Forbes.

John Walton’s widow, Christy, maintains a low public profile, but drew headlines last year for her anti-Trump stance.

Christy lives in Jackson, Wyoming, according to Forbes, and maintains a low public profile. Last year, Christy funded a newspaper ad calling for people to participate in the “No Kings” protests, and has also donated hundreds of thousands to the anti-Trump conservative group, the Lincoln Project, The Wall Street Journal reported.

James “Jim” Walton is the youngest son of Walmart founder Sam Walton.

Jim is 78 years old and worth an estimated $144.4 billion as of November 4, according to Forbes.

Jim serves as chairman of the family’s Arvest Bank Group.

Jim holds a 44% stake in Arvest Bank, one of Arkansas’ largest banks, according to Bloomberg.

He also served on the Walmart board from 2005 to 2016.

Jim co-manages Walton Enterprises and has done so since the 70s.

The holding company deals with the investments and finances of the Walton family.

Alice, the youngest of founder Sam Walton’s children, is the wealthiest woman in the world.

Alice Walton is 77 years old and worth about $134 billion, according to a November 4 estimate by Forbes. She has been divorced twice and has no children.

Alice has never taken an active role in running the family business.

While she did briefly enter the family business, Alice is a patron of the arts — a passion she had developed at a young age. She bought her first artwork when she was about 10 years old — a Picasso print.

In 1988, Alice founded an investment bank, Llama Company.

After the 1998 bond market crash, the company folded, according to Bloomberg.

She opened an art museum in 2011, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

Located in Bentonville, Arkansas, the museum underwent a massive expansion this year, expanding its footprint by 50%.

In 2017, Alice founded the Alice L. Walton Foundation, a charitable organization.

The foundation established the Alice L. Walton School of Medicine in 2021, which welcomed its first class of students in 2025. Tuition will be waived for the first five cohorts.

This philanthropic spirit began with Sam and Helen Walton.

The charity awarded about $549 million in grants in 2024 and focuses on education, environmental protection, and investment in Northwest Arkansas and the Arkansas-Mississippi Delta, according to its website.

Sam and Helen started the foundation in 1987.

The Waltons saw the foundation as a way to teach their children to give back and work together, according to the website.

In December 2024, Walmart disclosed that Sam Walton’s grandchildren had become trustees of the Walton Family Holdings Trust.

There are now eight grandchildren of Sam Walton overseeing the family’s Walmart holdings, according to Walmart’s April 2026 proxy statement.

Though the Walton family is earning billions from the company’s success, they remain relatively under the radar.

Much like their patriarch, Sam, the siblings aren’t flashy about their wealth.
