To say this season has been an absolute disaster for the New York Mets would be putting things lightly. 

The Mets, who were hoping to be one of the better teams in Major League Baseball, just haven’t gotten anything right on either side of things. It’s unfortunate that the Mets are playing at this type of level, but it’s just the reality of how bad things have gone over the past few months. 

We can look at some of the moves the Mets have made in the past as the reason why this team has struggled at the level it has. 

Ultimately, while they tried to get creative and let certain free agents, like Pete Alonso, walk, it had an unfortunate impact on the organization’s future. So much so that the latest stat will show just how bad the idea to move on from Alonso really is, as the Mets have statistically been the worst team in Major League Baseball at first base in terms of fWAR.

“The Mets have the lowest fWAR in MLB at both first base (-1.1) and second base (-0.4). After injuries and poor production, the Mets lacked rotation depth because their pitchers in the upper minors weren’t ready for major-league opportunities. They can no longer count on Brett Baty and Mark Vientos as inexpensive depth and don’t have another hotshot position-player prospect bursting through the minors after graduating Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing to the majors,” Will Sammon wrote.

This doesn’t really surprise any fan, if I had to guess, considering how bad the Mets have been on the offensive side of things at first base over the past few months. However, it also shows they didn’t value Alonso at the level they needed to, and as a result, they’re a much worse team.
