So when the Packers handed wide receiver Christian Watson a significant extension, that worry was certainly present among parts of the fan base.
Watson addressed those concerns directly during an interview, making it clear he plans to stay competitive moving forward. The Packers wide receiver emphasized that that edge is a core part of why he loves the game, signaling to fans that his mindset and approach will not change after signing his new deal.

“I mean, 100%, I’m looking forward to that … the thing I love most about football is the competitiveness, and I wanna compete every single play,” Watson remarked via Dave Schroeder on X (formerly Twitter).
The Packers recently locked in a major commitment by signing Christian Watson to a four-year, $110.5 million extension. Watson, a second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, has been a steady presence in Green Bay’s offense over the past few seasons, though his production has been somewhat inconsistent.

“The more opportunities, the better for me. Obviously, I know it’s not reasonable, but if I could, I would wanna be out there every single play. So, however many opportunities that I get this year, I’m gonna try to make the most out of every single one.”
The 27-year-old has yet to fully develop into a clear WR1 for the team, totaling 2,264 receiving yards over four years. Injuries have also limited his availability, as he has been restricted to 10 or fewer games in two of his four seasons with the franchise.
Year 5 gives Watson a clear opening to finally step into a leading role within Green Bay’s passing attack. With Romeo Doubs leaving in the offseason, the Packers’ wide receiver depth chart has shifted, placing Watson in a more central spotlight. He will now compete with Jayden Reed and sophomore Matthew Golden for the WR1 role heading into the season.
He should also get a boost from the return of Tucker Kraft, who has emerged as one of the league’s more dynamic tight ends. Now, the question becomes whether Watson can take full control of the receiver room and establish himself as Green Bay’s clear WR1.
