  • Although I wish we’d gotten more salad and that my chips hadn’t been missing, I was impressed.
  • Ultimately, we were able to make six well-portioned, tasty meals at home for less than $10 each.

I build the same salad bowl every time I go, so I don’t pay much attention to the rest of the menu. It wasn’t until I saw Chipotle’s strange fever-dream of an advertising campaign that I learned about its family meals.

Simply put, it involved a 3-foot reusable version of its takeout bag. Bizarre, yes, but it worked.

Curious about the details (and the “big ass” bag mentioned in the advertisement), I did some Googling. Turns out, Chipotle launched its family meals in August 2025.

The build-your-own experience is a major appeal. Per Chipotle, “People can create any bowl, salad, or soft taco to their liking and dietary preferences.” Nachos were also suggested.

Since I love salads and my partner prefers bowls, it seemed like the perfect setup. Plus, family meals are designed to serve four to six people — which, in my two-person household, could mean dinners for days.

My local Chipotle had a few options for family meals.

Even though I set my sights on its $52 chicken meal, Chipotle also offered steak and sofritas meals featuring the same standard fixings:

  • rice (white or brown)
  • beans (black or pinto)
  • cheese
  • romaine lettuce
  • large chips
  • 10 soft-flour tortillas
  • three dips (choices included sour cream and four different salsas)
  • one premium side (either guacamole or queso).

The meals ranged from $52 to $63, depending on the protein. It’s worth noting that these family meals are all digital-only, so they have to be ordered through the app or website.

Ordering online felt seamless.

Since I stuck with the baseline, customization-free spread, ordering took only a few clicks.

Then, I scrolled to the “extras” section. I could add another protein and up to seven extra toppings, but they’d increase the total price.

An extra protein portion, listed as serving two people, ranged from $7 to $10. Extra toppings like salsa and cilantro lime sauce cost an additional $2.35 to $3 apiece. For more so-called “premium” toppings like guacamole or queso, I’d pay a whopping $5.90 each.

Since it was just my partner and me, I skipped everything additional. I’d only splurge on extras for a gathering.

Then, I walked to pick up my order.

I had the option to have my order ready in as little as 10 minutes, but I scheduled my pickup for half an hour out and then walked to the restaurant.

When I arrived, I spotted two bags with my name on them (literally). Since I’d already paid online, I was in and out in under a minute.

The food was still warm after a quick stroll home.

The bags had everything needed for a six-person party.

Inside the bags, I found five containers and four cups arranged neatly.

They also included napkins, utensils, and six serving bowls — so I assumed the meal was prepared for six people, not four.

The meal felt excessive for four and perfect for six.

I’m not going to complain about too much food, but divided into four portions, the bowls would’ve been hard to finish. Six servings felt like the magic number … for the most part.

Split into six bowls, each would get a moderate amount of chicken, rice, and beans. The same held true for the sour cream, guacamole, and salsas.

The portion of shredded cheese seemed quite generous — probably enough for eight — though in my household, bonus cheese is never an issue.

The amount of lettuce, however, felt somewhat meager for six.

Making salads didn’t seem very practical.

Salads are my go-to at Chipotle, but if I wanted to build more than two, I’d be out of lettuce. Even though the chain’s press release mentioned creating salads, the shredded greens seemed more like a topping, not a base.

Instead of depleting the entire container of greens on the first night, I followed my partner’s lead and made a bowl.

When reached for comment, a Chipotle representative said that the family meal includes 8 ounces of lettuce that’s “intended as a topping for bowls rather than as a base for salads.”

He later said it could be used for a salad, but it’s not intended to be enough for four to six salad entrées, which are usually served on a base of Chipotle’s Supergreens mix.

I created a bowl based on six servings, and the portion felt generous.

Flavor and texture-wise, this at-home bowl seemed identical to the in-store version. The chicken was tender and well-seasoned, and the rice stayed firm, not soggy.

As usual, Chipotle’s black beans were beautifully spiced.

It wasn’t a big deal, but I needed a microwave for the tortillas.

I didn’t expect to need to use appliances for my takeout meal, but Chipotle’s tortilla bag recommended a 60- to 90-second zap in the microwave.

Thankfully, I was at home and therefore had access, but it seemed impractical for a portable meal.

Hassle aside, I wasn’t a huge fan of microwaving food that was in a plastic package — to get the proper experience, however, I followed the instructions.

Unfortunately, my chips were missing.

My only major gripe with this meal was the chips, or lack thereof. A large bag should have been included, and the receipt even listed one, but the crunchy snack was nowhere to be found.

Honestly, I’m still disappointed. I wish I’d noticed when I was still in the store, as I’m sure it would’ve been an easy fix.

Next time, I’d swap guacamole for queso.

Since my partner and I couldn’t polish off an entire cup of guacamole in one go, we’d be better off with queso next time, which stores perfectly in the fridge.

Overall, I’d order a family meal again for meal prep, gatherings, or both.

Despite the minimal lettuce, slightly inconvenient tortilla situation, and missing chips, I would order this meal again.

I was impressed by how well the ingredients kept their taste and texture, mirroring what I’d get at the actual restaurant. But unlike at the chain, I could customize bowls to my preferred proportions, or switch to tacos, which was a highlight for me.

Plus, a family meal costs less than ordering six individual bowls. A regular chicken bowl, without guacamole, tortillas, or chips, was $9.65. So, six bowls would come to $57.90 — and that wouldn’t include guacamole, tortillas, or chips, all of which are additional charges.
