‘I remain in charge of Rivers political structure’ – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, says he remains a major force in the political structure of Rivers State and the FCT, despite no longer being the governor of Rivers State.

Wike made the statement on Wednesday while speaking with journalists in Port Harcourt.

Responding to questions about whether the incumbent Rivers governor controls the state’s political structure, Wike said holding the office of governor was not the only way to influence politics.

“You do not need to be governor before you can be in charge. I am the General Commander of the Political Infantry; therefore, I am in charge. So also in FCT. I owe the president to give these two. As far as the election is concerned, you count FCT as a state,” he said.

The former Rivers governor explained that his visit to the state was partly to reconnect with his political supporters and spend time with his family.

“It’s not about relocating; it’s about coming home to reconnect with my people and talk to them, not taking chances… so that they don’t just sit in Abuja and think everything is going well,” Wike said.

He added that his visit was not entirely political, noting that he still had family responsibilities in the state.

Wike also claimed that his political influence had attracted more opposition against him.
