'I really wasn't aware': Marcel Reed reacts to possible QB change

It was a day of downs, ups and back down again for Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed during Saturday’s 31-20 loss to No. 13 Alabama.

Even Reed’s biggest supporter, head coach Mike Elko, considered making a quarterback change after Reed threw two early interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. However, Reed bounced back, helping the Aggies take a 20-17 lead entering the fourth quarter, but the offense fell flat again, producing just 15 yards and no points in the final period.

During the game, backup quarterback Brady Hart warmed up on the sideline, raising questions about whether Elko was preparing to make a change. After the loss, Reed was asked about the situation and whether he knew his starting job might be in jeopardy.

“I really wasn’t aware if my leash was short or not. It’s up to me when my name is called to go out there and play. If they decide they want to go with Brady, I am right behind him, supporting him because I know how good of a quarterback he is as well.”

Elko also acknowledged that replacing Reed had crossed his mind as the Aggies struggled to find their footing offensively.

“Yes, for sure, a thought. We couldn’t continue to go that way, but Marcel went back out there and battled.”

Despite the early mistakes, Reed remained in the game and helped Texas A&M recover from a difficult start. He finished 14-of-21 for 163 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, while adding a rushing touchdown. However, the fourth-quarter struggles continued a concerning trend for an Aggies offense that has struggled to sustain drives and finish games against SEC competition.

Texas A&M enters its open week at 4-4 overall and 1-4 in SEC play. With four regular-season games remaining, the Aggies must find more consistency at quarterback and across the offense if they hope to finish the season on a positive note.
