Nikolaj Ehlers, Logan Stankoven, and Nicolas Deslauriers each had two goals to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 6-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena on Tuesday night. The win gives Carolina eight wins in their last nine games and they also have a 2-1-0 record during this road trip.
Deslauriers scored the game-winner. It was the first time in a long time Carolina’s “enforcer” had a multi-goal game.
This was a bit of a weird game as the Canes seemed to have control of the game, but the Canucks were able to keep it close until the third period. The Hurricanes outshot the home team 44-17 for the game.
Pyotr Kochetkov earned another win in net, giving him a 6-0-0 record so far this season.
Four minutes and change in the game, Logan Stankoven started things off with a nice shot when he got a perfect pass from Jackson Blake. Blake was skating like a mad man all night and was setting up plays all over the rink. He finished with a team high three assists, giving him 10 for the season which is also a team high.
Vancouver would tie it up shortly afterward but Blake would strike again when he found Ehlers alone at the other side of the net. But with just a second left in the opening period, the Canucks scored again on the powerplay.
It was not a great night on special teams this night as Carolina went 0-5, including one four minute chance while they allowed 1 for 2 chances on the penalty kill.
In the second, Deslauriers made it 3-2 off a nice play by Jesperi Kotkaniemi. “DLO” roofed the shot just like a 30 goal scorer would do it.
Later in the period, Sebastian Aho was awarded a penalty shot when a Canuck pushed his stick along the ice to try to disrupt an Aho shot, but Aho was stopped by goalie, Leevi Merilainen.
Four minutes into the third period, Deslauriers made it 4-3 when he took a nice pass from Bradly Nadeau from behind the net. That goal turned out to be the game-winner.
Ehlers would steal a faceoff loss and break in alone to make it 5-3 and the visitors could finally take a breath. Stankoven added another on an empty net to finish the scoring.
The Canes will travel next to Edmonton for a match up on Thursday night. This should be a good one as two of the top teams in the league meet. It surely will be a test for the injury depleted Hurricanes.
