How Western Michigan won favor with AP voters in latest Top 25 poll

The latest AP poll showed Michigan falling from the top 25 college football teams, but that’s not even the most eye-opening result to come out of the team’s controversial home win over Western Michigan on Saturday.

The Broncos actually earned 12 points in the Top 25 poll compared to Michigan’s 69 points with the overall voting body, which is a nice boost for the program. Seven voters ranked actually Western Michigan in the top 25 of the poll; five of them didn’t rank Michigan at all.

We’re not sure if this is more of a statement from these voters for how the game ended, or if it’s genuine optimism that Western Michigan could be a legitimate force in the MAC this season. However, those votes don’t come lightly.

Michigan is clearly a loser in what happened in Week 1, even if the result doesn’t show it. Western Michigan will walk out of this situation a winner in reputation… or even the actual winner if a MAC appeal goes through.
