Florida State enters Monday night with plenty to prove after an uneven 34-17 victory over New Mexico State in Week 0. The Seminoles are coming off a disappointing 5-7 season and now get an opportunity to change the early narrative against No. 19 SMU at home. Head coach Mike Norvell remains in charge, but the pressure is mounting as Florida State looks to show it can once again compete with the top teams in the ACC.
Monday marks the season opener for SMU, who is coming off a 9-4 campaign that included a 6-2 record in conference play. The Mustangs did not face Florida State last season and will begin their 2026 schedule with a difficult road test before returning home for seven of their next nine games.
The matchup also continues a Labor Day tradition for Florida State. The Seminoles will play on the holiday for the ninth time since 2005, going 4-4 in their previous eight appearances. SMU, meanwhile, will play on Labor Day for the first time since hosting Texas Tech in 2007.
