A full 26 years after its last Big Ten title, No. 24 Northwestern is back in the mix to cause an upset in the conference as it welcomes Rutgers to Illinois on Saturday. The 5-1 Wildcats are right on the tail of the Big Ten’s established elite, though the competition has rarely looked so tight at the top.
Just one win separates first from sixth in the Big Ten entering this weekend’s action, where the Wildcats will be hunting a fourth straight win when they return to Ryan Field. Northwestern hasn’t reached double-digit wins in a campaign since 2017 but could break that drought if the stars align just right ahead of a rough run-in.
Rutgers’ prospects are considerably more modest after going 2-4 overall so far this season, though the Scarlet Knights did clinch their first conference win just last weekend. A 37-30 win on the road to a similarly unimpressive Maryland provided some relief, but not enough to inspire confidence of a second straight win in the Big Ten.
If the Scarlet Knights are to stand any chance at putting their hosts to the sword, nine-touchdown wideout KJ Duff will be critical, with the junior currently averaging 123.5 receiving yards per game. This poses the banana peel that could make Northwestern slip before upcoming games against Oregon, Ohio State, Iowa, and Minnesota.
