How does Titans QB Cam Ward respond after a loss? What his teammates say

Three days after his 15th loss in two seasons as the Tennessee Titans quarterback, Cam Ward displayed one of the more organized spaces in the team locker room.

Most of his clothes were on hangers. His navy blue seat was wiped clean, with a pair of jet-black Asics lined up on the ground.

Ward is under pressure to help ignite an offense that hasn’t been productive since 2020, when it finished fourth in the NFL in scoring, averaging 30.7 points.

All eyes are focused on how he’ll respond after the Titans‘ 23-10 season-opening loss to the Jets ahead of the Sept. 20 game against the Philadelphia Eagles (noon, FOX).

“I would say he’s been relentless,” said first-year Titans defensive tackle Timmy Horne, who sits two lockers down from Ward.

Ward on Sept. 16 was pressed about his mental process after a loss, if he uses anything off the field to reset mentally for the next week.

So, he does little differently beyond whatever on-field adjustments he sees. This week, he said he’s especially focused on “breaking the huddle with urgency” and applying that to each down. Ward lamented the offense’s production on first and second down vs. the Jets.

But he doesn’t employ any gimmicks after disappointing losses.

“Look, everybody has their own different things, whether that’s adding more film, or meditation, or just getting away (from football), having people close to you that you can lean on,” Titans second-year receiver Chimere Dike said. “I also think (in general) when you don’t have the results you want, it’s not necessarily that you blow up your entire process as a player. I think it’s more so resetting, understanding it wasn’t good enough. In the NFL, a lot of times it’s minor things you need to change. But if you stack up minor things, it becomes more of an issue.”

Ward figures to have a tough task to make those in six days, but new coach Robert Saleh said it’s possible as part of a bigger process. Ward showed hesitancy at times against the Jets, as he finished 19-of-32 passing for 140 yards and a touchdown, a chunk of that coming in the final minutes.

“He’s very deliberate,” Saleh said. “He’s very receptive, a great communicator. So with Cam, he’s not combative at all (about making adjustments).”

Titans veteran defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons emphasized that Ward isn’t to blame for all the team’s woes. The widespread issues against the Jets support that statement.

The focus on Ward stems from the Titans’ investment in him and the offense, which drafted receiver Carnell Tate at No. 4 overall in 2026 and signed receiver Wan’Dale Robinson to a four-year, $78 million contract in free agency.

Scoring more points was part of the deal.

That’s what made the Titans’ 10-point effort against the Jets — who had the NFL’s second-worst defense statistically in 2025 — hard for fans to watch. Especially in an NFL opening weekend where 10 teams surpassed the 30-point mark.

His teammates say they aren’t seeing him panic.

“I think that’s really Cam’s best quality. He’s so even-keel. He’s never been overly bothered by the highs and lows. Obviously, I think it was a low for everybody on Sunday,” Titans offensive guard Peter Skoronksi said. “But he’s kind of come back and been the same guy.”
