How did Arkansas baseball perform against SEC rivals in College World Series?

FAYETTEVILLE — Most supporters of the Arkansas baseball program would describe the 2026 season as a disappointment.

There aren’t many teams across the country with higher year-to-year expectations than the Razorbacks. With eight trips to the College World Series this century, the Hogs set their sights on a trip to Omaha every June.

This year, Arkansas fell to Kansas in the Lawrence Regional. It was the third time in the last four seasons that the Razorbacks failed to advance out of the NCAA Tournament’s first weekend.

Now, Dave Van Horn’s squad will have to watch the College World Series from home, and there will be ample opportunities to wonder “what if” based on which teams are still standing.

The final eight for Omaha are set. Here’s a look at how Arkansas fared against this year’s participants in the College World Series.

Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Ole Miss and Texas all reached the College World Series and popped up on the Arkansas schedule in 2026. The other three teams to reach the grandest stage in the sport are North Carolina, Troy and West Virginia.

Against their five SEC rivals, the Razorbacks went 9-5 with a run differential of plus-11. They won weekend series against Alabama, Oklahoma and Ole Miss.

Arkansas did not play Texas during the regular season, but the Hogs got the better of their old Southwest Conference rivals in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament. Hunter Dietz recorded two outs in a shortened start due to an injury, but Arkansas was still able to prevail. Van Horn and his team thought that win would secure a home regional.

The earliest meeting with any of the SEC teams still standing ended up changing the course of the Arkansas season.

The Hogs went on the road to face No. 9 Alabama in mid-April with a 5-7 record in the SEC and an RPI in the 50s. At the time, a home regional was an afterthought.

“We were struggling. We didn’t know which way we were going to go,” Van Horn said.

Arkansas turned the tide with a three-game sweep over Alabama. A six-run eighth inning in Game 1 and 10 runs in the final two frames of Game 2 clinched a winning weekend. The Hogs finished things off with a one-run victory in Game 3.

The next month, Arkansas welcomed Ole Miss to Baum-Walker Stadium. The rivals split two blowout results to open the series, and the Razorbacks trailed by one entering the bottom of the ninth in the rubber match.

That’s when freshman Christian Turner provided one of the signature moments of the season with a two-run walk-off homer to clinch the series.

Arkansas then wrapped up its home slate with a series victory over Oklahoma. The Hogs won Game 1 behind Hunter Dietz and then found some more eighth-inning magic to rally for a Game 2 victory. Arkansas ran out of pitching in the finale.

The one Omaha team that Arkansas had a losing record against in 2026 is Georgia. Van Horn went 1-3 this spring against Wes Johnson, his former assistant.

The Hogs won the first meeting between the teams as Dietz pitched them to 6-3 victory in Game 1 of a weekend series. The Razorbacks couldn’t get their offense going in a Game 2 loss.

The final two matchups were routs. Georgia won 26-14 to clinch the weekend series, and the Bulldogs cruised to an 11-1 win over Arkansas in the SEC Tournament Final. The back end of the Arkansas pitching staff had no answers for Georgia’s offense.

The Bulldogs will begin their run at the 2026 College World Series with matchup against Texas, and Alabama plays Oklahoma. Those four SEC members are on the same side of the bracket, while Ole Miss gets things going on the opposite side against North Carolina.
