How Clemson freshman Tait Reynolds stunned UNC

North Carolina had every opportunity to make Tait Reynolds look like a true freshman making his first career start.

Instead, the Clemson quarterback left Saturday’s game looking like one of the nation’s most promising young players.

Reynolds was named 247Sports True Freshman of the Week after helping Clemson erase a 14-point deficit in a 28-20 win over UNC at Memorial Stadium. The recognition only makes the Tar Heels‘ first loss of the season sting a little more.

UNC had Clemson exactly where it wanted it.

The Tar Heels jumped out to a 14-0 lead and carried a 17-6 advantage into halftime. Reynolds had thrown an interception, Clemson had yet to reach the end zone and North Carolina appeared positioned to spoil the freshman’s first start.

Then Reynolds settled in.

The freshman completed 20 of 29 passes for 215 yards, one touchdown and one interception while adding 26 rushing yards. More importantly, he completed his final seven passes for 115 yards as Clemson took control in the second half.

His biggest throw came on a 27-yard touchdown pass to Christian Bentancur in the third quarter, capping a 92-yard drive that pulled Clemson within 17-15. The Tigers eventually scored 22 of the game’s final 25 points after falling behind 17-6.

For UNC, that is what makes Reynolds’ freshman honor particularly frustrating.

Bill Belichick’s defense did enough early to put a young quarterback under pressure and give the Tar Heels control of the game. But rather than forcing Reynolds into more mistakes, UNC watched him become increasingly comfortable as the afternoon progressed.

The contrast at quarterback was also difficult to ignore.

While Reynolds finished with 215 passing yards, Billy Edwards Jr. completed just 13 of 30 passes for 135 yards with one touchdown and one interception. UNC rushed for 214 yards, including 130 from Benjamin Hall, but couldn’t generate enough through the air to put Clemson away.

That became particularly costly because North Carolina had chances to create separation.

Reynolds deserves credit for responding.

He entered the matchup with little experience after replacing Christopher Vizzina against Georgia Southern a week earlier. Reynolds threw for 178 yards in that 22-7 victory before Dabo Swinney handed him the starting job against UNC.

His first start came against a Tar Heels team that entered Death Valley 2-0, and his first ACC game began with Clemson falling into a two-touchdown hole.

The fact that UNC couldn’t rattle him after Clemson’s slow start should bother the Tar Heels more than the weekly award itself.

North Carolina had a freshman quarterback making his first start on the ropes and couldn’t finish the job. By the end of the afternoon, Reynolds wasn’t merely surviving against the Tar Heels. He was helping Clemson complete a comeback that dropped UNC to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in ACC play.

For Clemson, it’s another encouraging sign that the Tigers may have found their quarterback.

For North Carolina, it’s another reminder of an opportunity that was there for the taking — until the freshman quarterback on the opposite sideline took it instead.
