Warning: Some SPOILERS lie ahead for Marshals season 2’s first three episodes!Kayce and Andrea are beginning new chapters in Marshalsseason 2.
The first season of CBS’ hit Yellowstone spinoff saw Luke Grimes’ Dutton descendant rocked by the death of his wife, Kelsey Asbille’s Monica, and struggling to put back the pieces of his life together as he balanced raising his teen son, Brecken Merrill’s Tate, with his new job as a Deputy U.S. Marshal. Ash Santos’ Andrea became one of Kayce’s teammates, all while struggling with having been transferred from Washington D.C. to Montana.
Now, coming into Marshals season 2, things have shifted for both Yellowstone characters, with the premiere seeing Kayce having to race to rescue his son from the ruthless Tom Weaver, and is now grappling with how to help Tate process all of the trauma he’s experienced in his life. Andrea, meanwhile, has elected to remain in Montana after finding a family with the rest of the team, though as she begins to make roots in the area, she also finds the dynamics shifting amid the declining health of Logan Marshall-Green’s Cal.
Following the show’s mammoth return, ScreenRant‘s Grant Hermanns interviewed Luke Grimes and Ash Santos to discuss Marshals season 2. When asked about elements from season 1 that he wanted to see evolve or amplified in season 2, the executive producer/star acknowledged that the show’s debut season “dealt a lot with grief” due to Asbille’s exit and the subsequent death of her Yellowstone character.
Grimes denoted how important it was for the showto “really honor that and take our time” with his and Tate’s grieving Monica. However, as they come into Marshals season 2, Grimes teases that things are about to change as he’ll “start to heal and move past that,” as well as “maybe open him up a little bit more to some new possibilities“:
Luke Grimes: A lot of the season is him realizing how lonely his life could actually become once Tate’s grown and gone, and he’s living out in the sticks by himself. That doesn’t look like a very enticing future for him. So, he has to really lean into his community with this team, which has become sort of a new family for him, and open himself up to the possibility of maybe romance, or falling in love again.

As for Andrea, now that she finds herself starting to commit more to being in Montana, Santos similarly teases that Marshals season 2 will see her character “try to open herself back up again,” seemingly alluding to the death of Riley Green’s Garrett in season 1 amid Weaver’s efforts to acquire East Camp. More notably, though, is that Andrea is about to take on a much bigger role in her team, even if it’s one she’s not quite keen to take.
Ash Santos: She is also reluctantly being thrust into more of a leadership position within the team. With Cal and where he’s at with his health, it ends up opening [that] door, and she’s almost got two hands on either side of the door frame. She isn’t ready to go through, but I think it’s a lot of fun to play with all the variations of her character, and like all the versions we get of her this season.

Marshals Season 2 Will Put Kayce & Andrea Through Some New Emotional Hurdles
ScreenRant: Ash, I’d love to turn to you next because, obviously, season 1, you’re joining one of the biggest franchises on TV in terms of Yellowstone, so I’m sure there’s a little bit of nerves about how fans are going to respond. But now that you’re in season 2, Andrea’s established herself with the fan base. What was going through your head as you went into production on this one compared to season 1?
Ash Santos: Season 2, the nerves were still there, but in a different way. We came out with such a bang in season 1, and we were so lucky to be so successful out of the gate that season 2, you just hope that you can hold on to that. It’s terrifying. It was my first time being able to even come back to the second season of a show, and put on the costume again. Day 1, wearing the same wardrobe that I wore at the end of season 1, because it was a continuation, I joke all the time that it feels like you’re going through another grade of high school. You’re coming back to the crew and a lot of the same faces, but some have changed. It feels kind of like that.

ScreenRant: Luke, I’d love to turn to you next, Dolly’s death, I was taken aback by, especially as, much like when I spoke with you and Kelsey for Yellowstone season 5 part 2, you had to dance around John’s fate. I interviewed Spencer right before, and did not know what was gonna come, and I’m asking what the future is gonna look like for them. So I’d love to hear for you, what is sort of going through Kayce’s head now that Dolly died in this attempt to save Tate. Is there some betrayal still, because she ended up siding with her father? Is there grief? Is there guilt?
Luke Grimes: Yeah, I think he was sort of grappling with the idea with Dolly if it was too early for him to open himself up in that way. Clearly, she had some interest in him, and I think it was always our intention to make the audience wonder whether that was going to be reciprocated or not. And just as he’s getting close to maybe making a decision about whether that can be something that could happen, her father kidnaps his kid, and then he’s like, “Well, this clearly is not going to be a thing. Whether you’re guilty or not, I’m sort of done with you at this point.” [Chuckles] So, yeah, I think the worst-case scenario for Kayce is something happening to Tate at this point. He’s all he’s got, so the moment that happens, I think that there is no possible future, and I don’t think he minds at all that she passed away.

ScreenRant: Speaking of decisions, Ash, I’ll turn to you next because I’m so glad that Andrea has made the decision to stay in Montana. She’s been such a great part of this team, and obviously the team are excited to have her back. Brent Cullins’ character is also thrilled she’s sticking around, but we know bureaucratic nonsense can sometimes be a thing, so I’m curious if her decision to stay there might ruffle some feathers back in D.C. that might come along in the future.

Ash Santos: Oh, that’s a really good question. I still have yet to know if that’s coming down the pipeline. I think if it did, that would be really interesting for her story. Andrea just ultimately decided that staying in Montana and staying with her team was the best decision for her. I found it a lot of fun, especially with Brett’s character, Gifford, because he sees so much potential in Dre, especially after the Clegg situation. We’ll come to see there’s a little bit of — not animosity, but friction between Gifford and Cal, because they have different perspectives on Dre. So that part’s really, really cool to me, to see the dynamic between the both of them in regards to that.

ScreenRant: By the way, how did it feel getting to step back into the Dutton graveyard for episode 2 of this season? Because, as a fan, that was such a cool thing to see part of the original land get to come back for this show.
Luke Grimes: Yeah, man, I mean standing in a graveyard’s never cool. [Chuckles] But yeah, anytime we get to bring back anything from the original show, it always feels like we’re making it again, in a way, and it’s got a special place in my heart. I really loved that scene. We always try to keep things for anybody who was a fan of Yellowstone, like little Easter eggs. Also, we’ve got Jimmy back this year, which is the best example of that. So, I’m very happy to have him around and give something to the fans.

ScreenRant: I know I’m coming close to time, so just a couple more questions for you. With episode 1 sending Tom Weaver to jail, that sort of takes who I thought was going to be a big bad off the board, but at the same time, in talking with Logan and Spencer, they teased that there might be a new big bad on the horizon. Is that something that you can maybe give a little preview on, or are we going to be focusing a little more on cases of the week this season?
Luke Grimes: I think, like last season, there’s going to be a little bit of both. I think the strength of our show is that it can have one foot in both of those worlds. There are storylines that go through the entire season, but you do always get that nice little package of, “There’s going to be something in this episode that we need to do, and we’re going to get it done.” For people who love that kind of storytelling. So, you’re going to get some bad guys that stick around for a while, and some that you get to meet for one episode, which I think is the brilliant motor behind our show.

ScreenRant: Very final question for you. Spencer already confirmed that scheduling wise and everything, no crossover with Dutton Ranch this season. I know that’s obviously a big thing on your goal list as well, Luke. But I’d love to hear, Dutton Ranch season 2 is going to film next year, and I’m curious if you’re trying to find a way to make it to where you can go to them, and they can come to you, as far as crossovers happening?
Luke Grimes: I’ll answer this question if you promise me one thing.
Luke Grimes: I’ll answer this question if you promise me one thing.
Luke Grimes: Don’t make it the clickable link, because every time I answer this question, it is the link.
Ash Santos: Becomes the headline.
Luke Grimes: And then people think I’m obsessed with some crossover that I never even talked about. [Laughs] It’s not out of the question. Beth is his only living family member, besides his son. It would make sense that they would communicate at some point, but there’s nothing planned as of right now. But I can totally see that happening one day, and I am not obsessed with the idea of it happening, no matter what the internet tells you. [Laughs]
