Houston Texans turning point: Early 4th-down failure looms large in loss to Cincinnati Bengals

Each week, we take a closer look at arguably the biggest play from the Houston Texans’ game. Here’s what we viewed as the turning point from Sunday’s 20-6 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals at Reliant Stadium.

The situation: Texans’ ball, fourth-and-1 at Bengals’ 18-yard line.

The score: Bengals 0, Texans 0

Time remaining: 6 minutes, 58 seconds in second quarter

The sequence: For the second time in as many drives, the Texans drove into the red zone. But on fourth and short, running back David Montgomery was stuffed for a loss by Bengals defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, who blew through the Texans’ offensive line virtually unblocked.

The aftermath: The Bengals took the ball and scored on the ensuing drive, taking a lead they never relinquished. Meanwhile, the Texans faced another fourth-and-1 at the Bengals’ 40 trailing 10-3 early in the third quarter and – perhaps cognizant of the failure earlier and game-long inability to run the ball – opted to try a 58-yard field goal, with Ka’imi Fairbarn’s kick falling short.

What might’ve been: If the Texans convert the first fourth down, they had a good chance of opening the scoring, a boost for an offense playing without top playmaker Nico Collins. Instead, Houston found itself playing catch-up the rest of the way – and unsuccessfully at that.
