After his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers, the entire NBA world was waiting to see where LeBron James would end up. Ultimately, he ended up signing with the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Sixers have a stacked roster with some huge contracts already. However, James’ focus remains on winning, which led to him taking a two-year, $8 million deal from their organisation.
James has made over $580 million in salary alone from his years in the league. And the cut he’s taken to his existing salary has inadvertently ended up making NBA history.
Fans react to LeBron James’ $48.7 million pay cut being the largest ever
During his final year with the Lakers, James made $52.7 million as salary. Now that he will be going down to $4 million a year, that’s a direct $48.7 million pay cut.
This makes it the largest pay cut any player has taken in the history of the game. Once this fact became viral on social media, fans had to give their takes on it.
“A needed sacrifice securing us a championship. That’s why he is the GOAT,” a Sixers fan commented. “It was always going to come down to this if he wanted to win,” a fan pointed out.
“This is cool and all, but he’s got enough already,” someone observed. “He is already a billionaire, so he makes enough money off the court. He just wants a ring now,” said a fourth fan.
There were some jokes at Kawhi Leonard’s expense, too. “He just gonna get that secret Aspiration deal on the side,” a fan joked. “We know salary ain’t the only way to get paid. Just ask Kawhi,” wrote another.
James’ reported net worth is upwards of $1.2 billion, although the man continues to put in the work like it isn’t even a tenth as much. The sole objective now seems to be to try and add to the championship tally.
