Andoni Iraola may have only been in charge of Liverpool for a few months now but, he’s already made a lot of changes to their ranks.
After their fifth-place finish last season, it was clear that Arne Slot was not the right manager to take the Reds forward.
The Dutchman may have won the Premier League during his first campaign in charge but, after he spent over £450 million and re-jigged his team completely, things just didn’t go to plan.
The former Feyenoord boss moved away from Liverpool’s squad being Jurgen Klopp’s team and he tried to instil his own beliefs into the squad.
Admittedly, this did work for the first few games of the season but, after they were figured out, nothing went to plan.
Since Iraola’s arrival, he’s already changed many different things in L4 and now, one of his men is about to get handed his last-ever chance of saving his Liverpool career.
Giorgi Mamardashvili is going to get started by Liverpool vs Tottenham
Alisson is obviously going to be Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper this season.
Last term, the Brazilian spent an awful lot of time on the sidelines due to injury which allowed Giorgi Mamardashvili to try and prove his worth.
The Georgian played in 20 games across all competitions for Liverpool and managed to concede 34 goals in those outings.
One of the main reasons why Liverpool signed him in the first place was his shot-stopping.
However, now that he’s part of a team who don’t face all that many shots, his inability to shot-stop is starting to shine through.
The same thing happened with his distribution as, even though he looked solid in that department when playing for Valencia, he was beyond awful in that department for Liverpool.
This under-performance has led to Liverpool’s fanbase being less than impressed by the Georgian with fans more than happy that Alisson chose to stay put rather than join Juventus in the summer.
Mamardashvili was actually linked with an Anfield exit himself towards the end of the summer but, luckily for him, Liverpool chose to keep him around.
As mentioned, he’s the Reds’ second-choice ‘keeper for now but, if he has another abysmal season, that could change rather quickly, so, the fact that Iraola is playing him against Tottenham on Tuesday evening could be a massive moment for the 25-year-old.
Giorgi Mamardashvili has to play well vs Tottenham if he wants to make a career for himself at Liverpool
As mentioned, Mamardashvili is a bit of a curious case.
When he was first signed by Liverpool, fans thought that their club had brought a very similar player to Caoimhin Kelleher to L4.
And, while there have been times when he’s looked just as good as the Irishman, after the 20 games he featured in for Liverpool last term, it’s now more than clear that Kelleher is leagues above the Georgian.
So, since Alisson seems to be staying fit now, every little opportunity that Mamardashvili gets given needs to be taken.
The “heroic” ‘keeper was once seen as one of the best young ‘keepers in the world but, if he doesn’t take his chances, like the one he’s being given against Tottenham on Tuesday evening, he’s very likely to get moved on in the future,
That is, .
For Mamardashvili’s sake, we’re hoping that he doesn’t mess things up and can actually deliver a good performance, otherwise, someone such as Freddie Woodman could end up being favoured over him before Brughmans joins next summer.
