“He Needs to Get Over Himself”: Wings Fans Blast Jose Fernandez For Calling Out Paige Bueckers and Co’s Lack of “Accountability”

After Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings suffered a 94-76 loss to the Golden State Valkyries on Friday, coach Jose Fernandez called out the players for their lack of “accountability.”

“I think confidence is great, but we got to take individual accountability,” he told reporters. “Along with that confidence, I mean…they gotta get on each other a little bit more. It can’t just be the coaching staff.”

Toward the end of his post-game press conference, Fernandez asked reporters to direct questions to the players about the team’s ability to find the “jolt” to bounce back after a series of losses since the All-Star break.

“How do we find it? You guys can ask that question to the players as well,” he said.

Fernandez refused to address potential errors from the coaching staff and seemingly blamed the players for the recent stretch of four losses in five games. Wings fans had enough of the first-year coach. Most wanted him to be just as accountable as the players.

Paige Bueckers and the Wings have lost four of their last five games

The Wings have lost four of their last five games. They are in a rapid decline, falling to seventh after Friday’s loss. They would face the Las Vegas Aces in round one of the playoffs if the season were to finish today.

Dallas can’t let that happen if it aspires to make a deep playoff push. As good as Paige Bueckers and the rest of the core can be, they lack postseason experience. The Wings have the talent and young legs to grind out the regular season and earn a favorable seeding, so that’s something they should focus on.

Getting a favorable matchup early can allow Dallas to settle into the playoffs. Despite the recent losing form, the Wings are only 0.5 games behind the Atlanta Dream, who are fourth.

It’ll be a tall task for Paige Bueckers and Co. to bounce back on Sunday against the league-best Minnesota Lynx. However, if they can, it would give them the desired momentum they need to finish the regular season.
