Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby was granted a temporary injunction against the NCAA on Monday. It allows him to play in the 2026 season, after a legal battle regarding his eligibility.
The whole debacle gave way to a wider debate about gambling, addiction, and the NCAA’s authority over the student-athletes.

Sorsby’s troubles began long before any courtroom. However, the NCAA opened an investigation after discovering that the quarterback had placed approximately $90,000 in sports bets over four years. The most terrible part was that among the allegations were 40 bets placed on Indiana football, his own team.
The NCAA declared Sorsby ineligible after the thorough investigation. Texas Tech filed an appeal on his behalf. The authorities further stated that athletes who bet on their own teams represent the most serious threat to competitive integrity, with penalties that can include permanent ineligibility. Sorsby’s legal attorney, Jeffrey Kessler, stated,
“Mental health of the athlete is the main focus here,” Kessler said. “We have Sorsby, who has been diagnosed with a mental health addiction, he should be supported here.”

Sorsby will not attend Texas Tech’s first two games of the 2026 college football season against Abilene Christian and Oregon State.
