HBO's 'Succession' Replacement Is So Good, It Already Got Renewed for Season 2

The Succession-sized hole in HBO’s lineup has had a few contenders circling it since 2023, but War might be the show with the clearest parallel. It’s got the obscene wealth, the tailored suits. It’s even got the sterile high-rise offices where people deliver kill shots over sparkling water. And HBO apparently thought so too, giving it a two-season order before the first episode even aired. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

The series, created by Lupin’s George Kay, follows two rival London law firms battling it out over a celebrity divorce between a tech billionaire (Dominic West) and his movie-star wife (Sienna Miller). Archie Renaux, Phoebe Fox, Nina Sosanya, Pip Torrens, and Celia Imrie round out an ensemble deep enough to make the lawyers more interesting than the couple paying them. Almost.

The Celebrity Divorce at the Center of ‘War’ is Gloriously Messy

Season 1 centers on the nuclear-grade split between Morgan Henderson (West), a tech mogul with an ego to match the size of the high-rise hotel suite he entertains his mistress in, and Carla Duval (Miller), a movie star watching her cultural relevance shrink in real time. She’s set up a honeytrap to catch him cheating, but he’s filed his own divorce petition to get ahead of the fallout. And the two law firms hired to handle the wreckage — old-money powerhouse Cathcarts and scrappy upstart Taylor & Byrne — have their own longstanding vendetta that makes the actual divorce look civil by comparison.

Your answers point to the iconic universe your values, your instincts, and your particular way of seeing the world were built for. This is where you would find your people — and your purpose.

You believe in the cause — in the idea that freedom is worth fighting for even when the odds are impossible and the empire is vast.

  • You are drawn to the moral clarity of a universe where hope itself is a form of resistance.
  • You’d find your people in the Rebellion — a ragtag coalition of true believers held together by conviction more than resources.
  • Star Wars is fundamentally a story about ordinary people choosing to matter in an extraordinary conflict — and that is exactly your kind of story.
  • The Force may or may not be with you. But the will to use it for something larger than yourself certainly is.

You understand, in the deepest part of yourself, that the journey matters as much as the destination — and that the world’s beauty is worth protecting even at great cost.

  • Middle-earth is a world of ancient wonder, deep friendship, and a darkness that only retreats when enough small acts of courage accumulate.
  • You would thrive here because you value the fellowship more than the glory — the road more than the arrival.
  • Tolkien’s universe rewards patience, loyalty, and the willingness to carry something heavy across a very long distance.
  • Those are not burdens to you. They are simply how you move through the world.

You believe that love, loyalty, and doing what’s right are not naive sentiments — they are the most powerful forces in any world, magical or otherwise.

  • The Wizarding World is a place of wonder hidden in plain sight, where learning is transformative and the bonds you form at school follow you into every battle.
  • You would flourish here because you take both the magic and the friendships seriously — and you understand that one without the other is incomplete.
  • Harry Potter’s universe ultimately rewards those who choose to stand for something even when standing is terrifying.
  • That choice — made quietly, without guarantee — is something you understand completely.

You see the world clearly — its power structures, its hypocrisies, its brutal arithmetic — and you are not paralysed by that clarity. You use it.

  • Westeros is a world that rewards intelligence, adaptability, and the willingness to understand that every alliance is also a negotiation.
  • You would survive here — possibly thrive here — because you don’t confuse the world as it is with the world as you’d like it to be.
  • Game of Thrones is a story about what happens when the idealists and the realists collide. You are sharp enough to know which one lasts longer.
  • Winter always comes. You are already prepared.

You believe the future is worth building — that curiosity, cooperation, and the expansion of understanding are not just ideals but the most practical path forward for any civilisation.

  • Star Trek is a universe where the questions matter as much as the answers, and where encountering something utterly alien is cause for wonder rather than fear.
  • You would belong here because you are fundamentally optimistic about what intelligence and decency can achieve — while being honest about how hard that achievement is.
  • The Federation is the universe’s most ambitious thought experiment: what if we actually got better?
  • You don’t just hope that’s possible. You think it’s the only thing worth working toward.

Kay packs the season with shifting alliances, buried evidence, courtroom ambushes, and a subplot about a young lawyer named Johnny Warren (Renaux) who gets hired by Taylor & Byrne while secretly feeding intel to Cathcarts. It’s the kind of double-agent storyline that could tip into melodrama fast, but Renaux plays Johnny as a kid from Peckham who’s too hungry to care about the ethical implications of what he’s doing. And you kind of root for him, even when he’s being objectively terrible.

Dominic West and Sienna Miller Are Perfectly Cast in ‘War’

West has been playing men who are baffled that their own behavior has consequences since Jimmy McNulty in The Wire, and Morgan Henderson fits that mold like a glove. He’s punchable from the jump, moving through a breakup with wounded entitlement and bad-faith negotiation tactics, convinced he’s the real victim in a divorce he engineered. Miller, meanwhile, gives Carla a brittleness that makes her sympathetic even when she’s orchestrating the kind of PR warfare that would make a Kardashian publicist flinch. The show asks you to pick a side and then spends every episode making that harder.

But the real firepower is in the ensemble. Torrens plays St. John Smallwood, a Cathcarts partner who’s venomous, menacing, and just heartless enough to guarantee the nastiest possible outcome in his client’s case. Sosanya’s Beatrice Ubosi runs the other side of Cathcarts with a razor-sharp authority that one reviewer compared to Miranda Priestly. The supporting cast is stacked with talent, and Kay’s writing gives them enough to do that nobody feels wasted.

Right Now, ‘War’ Falls Short of the ‘Succession’ Playbook

The Succession comparison does War a lot of favors, but it’s also the fastest way to spot what’s not there yet. Succession got better every season because it kept peeling back layers on the Roys, finding new ways to make you feel sorry for people you wanted to strangle. War doesn’t have that same escalation yet. The tension starts high and stays there. It comes in hot and doesn’t always know how to build from there. That said, Succession Season 1 had the same growing pains before it figured out what it was. War has the raw materials, though it has less time to course-correct seeing as Season 2 will be an entirely different story.

Season 2 will shift to a new case, an explosive defamation lawsuit, with Marisa Tomei, Kelly Macdonald, and David Harewood joining the franchise. Whether any of the Season 1 cast returns hasn’t been confirmed, but the anthology structure means it doesn’t have to. The law firms are the constant. The cases rotate. It’s a smart model that gives the show space to reinvent itself every year without losing the institutional backbone that makes it interesting.

Nobody’s going to confuse War for Succession. It doesn’t have the Shakespearean family psychodrama or the same level of luxury porn. Yet, at least. What it does have is a deep bench of British actors chewing through gorgeous sets, a divorce case trashy enough to keep you gossiping about it between episodes, and the good sense to know that watching powerful people destroy each other is the genre HBO does better than anyone.
