Tonight marks the beginning of an epic battle for the fate of the World… Series. Jacob Misiorowski and the Milwaukee Brewers are hosting Junior Caminero and the Tampa Bay Rays to kick off Major League Baseball‘s fall classic, which will unfold over the next week and ultimately decide who will lift the commissioner’s trophy. This year is a particularly special edition of the annual championship because the two teams competing have both never won the pennant, meaning, no matter the outcome, an entirely new organization will be crowned the pinnacle of the sport. As the National and American League representatives carry the hopes of their fans and cities into the series, however, a certain supervillain has arrived to crush that very hope in his hands.
With just under two months left until Avengers: Doomsday, Doctor Doom has invaded Game One on Fox. MLB teased on Thursday that the latest superhero blockbuster would get a preview during the World Series with a short video of some of the game’s stars peering up at ominously darkened green skies. No indication was given as to what the preview would entail, but it was expected to be special as part of Marvel Studios’ ramped-up push to promote its biggest film since Avengers: Endgame.
The short video ended up being a proper crossover between the MCU and MLB, as Caminero, Misiorowski, Freddie Freeman, Bryce Harper, and Randy Arozarena watch Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) throw out the first pitch at Ebbets Field. Clips from Doomsday play as they imagine other heroes taking the mound, from Captain America to Thor, though the expected Cy Young winner Misiorowski is particularly impressed with Reed’s stretch. Doom’s arrival sends Harper and the rest running and kicks off the action, though Freeman would rather get a front-row seat to the battle ahead.
There’s still a lot we don’t know about Doomsday, even with multiple trailers out and more info about all the characters who will appear in it. Above all else, Doom’s takeover of the MCU will be a darker one, offering a threat arguably greater than Thanos at a time when Earth is without many of its mightiest heroes from that last climactic battle. Sebastian Stan, who will join his fellow New Avengers as Bucky Barnes once more, recently teased that, although he hadn’t seen the finished film himself, “I’m sure it’s going to be probably heartbreaking, in a lot of ways.” The general theme from the cast is that there will be spectacle and tragedy alike, with Anthony Mackie also ominously warning that “Everyone is expendable.”
Four villains, and four arguments the films were honest enough to
actually let them make. Here is the one you lean towards, the part of it that holds up, and the
exact point where it stops holding up.
You align with the one who was right about the problem and wrong
about the solution. Killmonger is the most persuasive villain Marvel has produced because
the film never pretends his anger came from nowhere.
- You notice who was abandoned and you cannot let it go, which is a moral instinct before
it is anything else. - His argument lands because Wakanda really did watch and do nothing, and the film makes
T’Challa admit it out loud. - Where it breaks is the method, since a man who was failed by power decided the answer
was to hold more of it. - Michael B. Jordan plays him as somebody performing certainty over grief, which is why
the last scene of that film still works.
You align with the protector, which is the most understandable
and most dangerous position on this list. Namor is not chasing power or revenge, he is doing
whatever keeps his people hidden, and he has been doing it for centuries.
- Your loyalty has a hard border around it, and everything inside that border matters far
more to you than anything outside it. - Talokan is the best realised world Marvel has built since Wakanda, and the film makes
you understand exactly what he is guarding. - His logic is airtight right up until it requires somebody else’s people to pay for his
people’s safety. - He would rather be feared by the surface world forever than trust it once, and history
has given him reasons.
You align with the patient one, the only man on this list with no
powers, no army and no hurry. Zemo lost his family in Sokovia and then spent years working
out that you do not fight the Avengers, you introduce them to each other’s secrets.
- You go quiet when you are hurt, and the quiet is where the thinking happens.
- Zemo is the only MCU villain who completely won, and he did it with a notebook, a plan
and a great deal of self control. - His grief is real, and the film is careful never to let you forget that he started as an
ordinary man with a family. - Where it fails is the cost, since taking apart the people who hurt him meant hurting a
great many people who did not.
You align with the one who decided the answer was arithmetic.
Thanos is not angry and not grieving in any way he will admit to, he simply reached a
conclusion and never once revisited it, which is precisely what makes him frightening.
- You are capable of holding a position that costs you everything, and you would call that
conviction rather than stubbornness. - Infinity War works because it is structured as his film, with a goal, a journey and a
sacrifice, and the heroes are the obstacle. - The flaw in the plan is not the cruelty, it is that he never seriously considered a
single alternative to it. - Josh Brolin plays him tired rather than triumphant, which is the choice that turned a
purple giant into a real character.
Who Has Been Confirmed for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ So Far?
For as many stars as there are between the Brewers and Rays, Doomsday is a murderer’s row of MCU powerhouses. All of the Fantastic Four and New Avengers are set to appear following their outings in The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Thunderbolts*; as well as the Wakandans, like Letitia Wright‘s Shuri, Tenoch Huerta‘s Namor, and Winston Duke‘s M’Baku; and some of the classic 20th Century Fox X-Men, including Patrick Stewart as Professor X and Ian McKellen as Magneto. Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth lead a cavalry of other legacy MCU stars returning for the fight, joining Tom Hiddleston, Paul Rudd, Hayley Atwell, Simu Liu, and many more, with surprises sure to show up throughout the feature. The most recent addition was that of Project Hail Mary star Sandra Hüller, who was confirmed this afternoon to be appearing in a secret cameo role.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18. Check out the new preview from the World Series above.
