Jose Mourinho says Kylian Mbappe is “hungry to make history at Real Madrid” after his hat-trick secured a 4-1 win over Real Sociedad.
It was Mourinho’s first competitive match back at the Bernabeu since taking charge of Madrid for his second spell, and Mbappe was the hero to get them three points.
Vinicius Junior also got on the scoresheet, while Jude Bellingham provided two assists in a successful first home game of the season, with Madrid staying perfect with two wins from two.
Mbappe became the first player to score a hat-trick in the Spanish top-flight this season, while his six for Madrid across all competitions since joining in 2024-25 are at least twice as many as any other LaLiga player.
The Frenchman led the team for both shots (eight) and touches in the box (13) against La Real, against whom he has now scored seven goals, his most against any team in the competition.
And Mourinho was full of praise for Mbappe, who became the all-time leading scorer at the World Cup this summer after taking his tally to 22 goals.
“He’s a historical player; his World Cup record will remain forever,” said Mourinho of Mbappe.
“He’s very hungry to make history at Real Madrid too. He isn’t just a goalscorer; he doesn’t wait for the whole team to create and then just score.
“He’s very involved in the game. When you coach elite players like this, you don’t need to coach them as individuals. You need to coach the team as a whole.”

Madrid saw Mbappe’s first goal cancelled out by Luka Sucic just before half-time, leading to a furious reaction from the home faithful.
But after the break, Mourinho’s side dominated, having 12 of their 20 shots in the second half, and accumulating 2.5 expected goals (xG) from those chances.
“I highlight that La Real are a very good team; they created a lot of difficulties for us,” Mourinho said.
“In these games, I would like to have the hydration break to be able to speak after 25 minutes; they caught us by surprise. They didn’t create too much danger, but it was difficult to put pressure on them.
“Until we changed in the second half, we were not calm. But we kept calm, and in the second half the team was very strong. I don’t like one thing very much, to speak individually, but what Mbappe has done is crazy. A lot of quality.”
